John Cena’s heel turn did not go over well with fans, but CJ Perry has explained why she liked it in spite of (or perhaps because) of that. Perry and Rusev had plenty of their interactions with Cena over the years, always as heels to Cena’s babyface. Even Cena has acknowledged that the heel run, which ran from Elimination Chamber to SummerSlam, fell short.

Perry spoke on TMZ Inside the Ring about why she liked his turn. She noted that she’s always a fan of heels and thought it was fun even though it failed. She also said she will never believe Cena, Undertaker and more will be fully retired. You can see highlights below:

On Why She Liked The Heel Turn:

“So I liked the heel run because — well, I’m a big heel fan. So, like basically anytime anyone is a heel, I’m happy. And it’s very rare that I like babyfaces. Like, John Cena is a rare situation, right? Even CM Punk. Whenever he’s babyface, I want him to be that heel character still… And so when he turned heel, I was one, so excited because I thought that would never happen. Anytime you have like a movie that we don’t we get an unexpected turn, I’m excited because I’m just so tired of the babyface always winning, you know?

“So that was like one thing, I never thought it would happen. We were told it would never happen. If Vince would have been there, it would have never happened. So I liked all those aspects.

On the Heel Run Not Working:

“Now, did it seem forced? Absolutely. Did it seem like he was playing a heel? Absolutely. But I think that’s also what I kind of liked about it. I thought it was funny. Like, him cutting like a super, on the nose heel promo. I thought it was cute…

“And that’s why it didn’t work is because it’s like, we all see you acting. We all see you giving us the formula. And I think it’s awesome, because like all the kids write it down, you know. All if you want — like he’s giving you the formula. So write it down. And if you make it your own, it will work. That formula, it’s 2 plus 2 equals 4. It always works. It will always work, especially for a new person. But because this man has been conditioned to be loved, we know him so well. That’s the reason why we see it. But the formula will work.”

On If She Believes Cena Is Truly Retired:

“[laughs] I mean, please. The the biggest worker of them all is John Cena. I never I will never believe that John Cena or the Undertaker are retiring. Or Triple H… I just think it’s a gimmick. Like, they’re all retiring because it’s like — it’s the gimmick, you know? We’re all going to buy the merchandise, we’re all going to buy the towel. We’re all going to be — And like, god forbid. Of course I’m going to go buy the towel and the cup and everything, because God forbid this is his last time, you know, And I don’t want to be that person be like, ‘Oh, yeah, he’s coming back.; And then it never happens.

“But I hope he’s not done. I would be really sad. I must be in denial. That’s why I’m laughing, I’m like, ‘No of course he would never.'”
