It looks like Maverick will once again feel the need for speed, as the Top Gun franchise will take flight once again. Back in 2024, it was revealed that Top Gun 3 was in the works at Paramount Pictures. During today’s (Apr. 16) keynote presentation at the 2026 CinemaCon, studio Co-Chair Josh Greenstein provided an update on the planned sequel.
During the presentation, Greenstein announced that a new Top Gun sequel is in the works, with a script being written. He also confirmed that the project will reunite Tom Cruise with longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. No other details on the film were announced, nor who might direct the feature.
The second installment, Top Gun: Maverick, released in 2022, was a massive hit for the studio, grossing $1.496 billion worldwide against a $170 million budget. It became the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s illustrious career. It was also nominated for six Academy Awards, winning Best Sound.

Maverick was directed by Joseph Kosinski, with a script by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. Back in 2024, it was reported that Kruger was tapped to write a script for the sequel. The original 1986 movie was directed by the late Tony Scott, with a script by
Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.
The planned Top Gun 3 does not yet have an official release window. Top Gun: Maverick came out 36 years after the original. Hopefully, the gap between the second and third films won’t be quite as long.
