The long wait for Overwatch 2 has taken a big step forward, as Blizzard is running a PVP beta next month. The company announced on Thursday that a closed alpha test for the game has begun today featuring Blizzard employees, Overwatch League pros, and a few others with the beta coming in late April for select regions on PC.

Overwatch has undergone a serious drought in the time since Overwatch 2 was announced in November of 2019, with development on the new game being delayed by the pandemic, changes in the game, and Activision Blizzard’s scandal regarding allegations of workplace misconduct and sexual harassment. The last new major content drop outside of two deathmatch maps was the hero Echo, who was released in March of 2020.

In a new developer video announcing the Overwatch 2 alpha and beta, Overwatch game director Aaron Keller apologized for the lack of communication and promised more frequent updates, while also unveiling some of what’s coming to the game. He noted that they were decoupling the PVP and PVE portions of Overwatch 2 which will allow players to get the PVP aspect sooner, and noted that following the closed beta there will be additional beta testing later in the year.

The official community update post has revealed that the April beta will include the previously-announced switch from 6v6 to 5v5, which sheds one tank from teams, as well as hero Sojourn. It will include four new maps, two of which will implement the new Push game mode, as well as reworks for Orisa, Doomfist, Bastion, and Sombra. Finally, the beta will feature the implementation of a ping system.
