Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 330, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. Well after a bit of a trough since UFC 329 ended in catastrophic disappointment we’re back to numbered events, and this one is just kind of OK. The main event is the best thing on the card as welterweight champion Islam Makhachev looks to continue his all time great run. Makhachev already holds the record for most lightweight title defenses at 4, moved up to welterweight and won that title, now he’s trying to become a two weight world champion with defenses of both belts. He’s also currently tied with Anderson Silva for most consecutive UFC wins at 16, so a win here would push him into uncharted territory. Across from him is Ian Machado Garry, a long rangy welterweight with just a single loss on his record and with wins over the dangerous Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad. In the co-main event strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern is going for her first title defense against veteran Gillian Robertson. Things get a little slim after that, Edson Barboza vs. Esteban Ribovics should be fun though, Joel Alvarez vs. Chidi Njokuani has violence potential, and kicking off everything is the always watchable Myktybek Orolbai against Jeremiah Wells. So it’s a bit of a mixed bag but there’s definitely a strong main event if nothing else. Now let’s just hope for some great action.

UFC 330 comes to the world from the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. We’ve got the usual trio of Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier on commentary while Bruce Buffer handles announcing and Megan Olivi does the roving reporter bit. We’ll be in the usual 30 foot cage, and I’m pretty sure we’ll have the newer rules but I’m not certain about Pennsylvania’s stance on that so I’ll update if there’s any weirdness around the rules.

Jeremiah Wells has gone 5-2 in the UFC, most recently he ended a two fight losing streak by getting a decision over Themba Gorimbo and now looks to build another winning streak. Myktybek Orolbai is on a three fight winning streak including his two wins since moving back to welterweight late last year. Orolbai is looking to start the move towards title contention with another win here. Orolbai is the biggest favorite on the card at a prohibitive -1200 to a +750 comeback on Wells.

Welterweight Bout: Myktybek Orolbai (16-2-1, 170.5 lbs.) vs. Jeremiah Wells (13-4-1, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Orolbai is an inch taller while the reach is identical, he’s also 9 years younger despite looking ancient. Both men feint early, Orolbai avoids a right hand. Wells does a little stance switching as he circles, pretty audible chant for Orolbai. Bit of a left hook from Orolbai. Both men swing and land punches in close before Wells grabs a clinch and pushes things to the fence. They break without incident. Mostly southpaw for Wells now. Jab from Wells. Orolbai lands a body kick. Body kick form Wells is caught and Orolbai gets a takedown into half guard. Orolbai looks to land a few punches as Wells gets butterfly guard. Wells gives up the ride trying to get up, then Orolbai moves to full mount and lands punches. Another scramble, Orolbai grabs a front headlock then spins to the ride again. Wells keeps trying to move on the mat but he’s always a step behind positionally. Some lefts from Orolbai. Wells is kind of stuck in the ride position and Orolbai fires more lefts. Orolbai’s riding is impressive, he drives knees to the leg and body then lands a couple punches as Wells finally gets upright and the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Orolbai

ROUND TWO: Orolbai gets back to pressuring forward. Bit of an outward crescent kick from Orolbai, you don’t see that every day. Wells misses a few punches. Wells is swinging hard but he’s missing. Orolbai grabs a single leg, then pushes Wells over against the fence. Punches from Orolbai, Wells wall walks but Orolbai is on his back. Trip from Orolbai and he’s on top in half guard again. Kimura attack from Orolbai, he moves to side control holding the double wrist lock. Orolbai loses the grip on his own wrist a bit, and he bails on the attack. Wells is able to shrimp to butterfly guard, he gets upright but Orolbai is on his back again and rides him back to a knee. Orolbai with some knees to the body, Wells gets upright but he’s still stuck to Orolbai. Bit of a cheese donkey from Orolbai and he drags things back to the mat. Both hooks in for Orolbai and he’s fishing for a choke. Wells is able to explode and roll into him, Orolbai immediately wall walks into the clinch though then Wells pulls free. Both men miss punches then feint away the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Orolbai, 20-18 Orolbai overall

ROUND THREE: Wells looks a lot flatter on his feet this round. Front kick from Orolbai. Orolbai jabs the body then avoids a few hooks, Wells is still throwing hard but his speed isn’t what it used to be. Both men land right hands. Orolbai grabs at a single leg, Wells defends and grabs a ninja choke and puts Orolbai to sleep with it.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jeremiah Wells via technical submission, ninja choke, at 1:24 of Round 3

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Wells for his work. Mic time for Wells, he talks about how much he’s worked on that particular choke then says he’ll never get a better chance to retire than this. He used to work at this venue and now he’s here. Rogan asks again about the future he says if he’ll get a top 15 opponent he’ll stay active but if he’s not going to get that kind of push then it’s time to be done. He sends love to his son who’s about to graduate from the Air Force boot camp.

The finish can be seen HERE.

Neil Magny has been with the UFC since 2013, he’s just 2-3 in his last five fights though and is coming off of a quick submission loss to Yaroslav Amosov. Magny is trying to avoid another losing streak and keep chugging along in the UFC until the wheels finally start falling off. Ramiz Brahimaj has gone 5-4 in the UFC and just had a three fight winning streak broken, now he’s trying to avoid his first UFC losing streak and take out one of the more respected names he’s faced. The odds lean towards towards Brahimaj at -145 while +120 on Magny might be a solid little value bet.

Welterweight Bout: Ramiz Brahimaj (13-6, 170 lbs.) vs. Neil Magny (31-14, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Magny is five inches taller with a big eight inches of reach advantage. Both men open with calf kicks. A few jabs go back and forth. Another calf kick from Brahimaj. Brahimaj catches a low kick and takes Magny down against the fence. Bit of a fence grab from Magny but nothing comes of it. Brahimaj moves to full mount. Magny is able to shrimp to half guard. Brahimaj lands a few short blows but nothing serious. Shoulder strike from Brahimaj. A lot of grappling threats from Brahimaj but very little ground and pound. Magny tries to grab a kimura, he bails on it after a second or two. Brahimaj keeps up the top pressure but still not much damaging offense. Brahimaj moves towards a bit of a mounted crucifix briefly but nothing comes of that. Magny tries to attack a leg, nothing there for him though and Brahimaj lands a punch before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Brahimaj

ROUND TWO: Quick double leg from Brahimaj, then he slips to the back standing. Magny is doing Magny things, slowly trying to melt Brahimaj. Magny is able to spin Brahimaj and briefly get to top position but Brahimaj lifts and spins then gets on top in full guard. At this rate Brahimaj is going to be dead in the third round given how much effort his expending related to how much damage he’s doing. Brahimaj passes to half guard briefly then Magny hip escapes to full guard. A few rights from Brahimaj land, finally something remotely substantial. We get into a leg drag and Magny sweeps with that into top position and lands punches. Brahimaj wall walks with Magny on his back. Some punches from Magny, Brahimaj might be hurt as well as tired, Brahimaj can’t move and Magny just lands enough punches to get the ref to step in.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Neil Magny via TKO, punches, at 3:20 of Round 2

Mic time for Magny, he feels good and plans to keep getting the work done. He talks about being perseverant in life and in fighting, then says he knew he could outlast Brahimaj.

Rafael Tobias dropped his UFC debut to Diyar Nurgozhay back in March and now looks to find that first UFC win. Lucas Fernando brings a four fight winning streak into his UFC debut, he’s looking to maximize his one chance at leaving a first impression. Fernando closed at -300 to a +240 comeback on Tobias.

Light Heavyweight Bout: Lucas Fernando (13-3, 205 lbs.) vs. Rafael Tobias (14-2, 204 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Fernando is an inch taller with five and a half inches of reach advantage. Fernando shows jabs early then misses a leg kick. Body kick from Fernando, he’s backing up Tobias. One two from Fernando. Stiff jab from Fernando. Tobias is really out of sorts already. Fernando misses a wheel kick then lands a combination of punches in close. Another body kick from Fernando, his left leg is very quick. Fernando with a calf kick. Front kick from Fernando. Another calf kick from Fernando. Bit of a one two from Fernando. Tobias seems more settled now, even though his offense isn’t really coming to life yet he’s not as unsure with his defense. Fernando punches into a clinch and things hit the fence. Knee from Fernando then a left to the body as they break. Fernando with a front kick, then Tobias barely avoids a high kick. Again Fernando lands a body kick then a one two. Hard calf kick from Fernando. Tobias catches a front kick then tree tops Fernando over and gets on top in full guard. Fernando kicks Tobias off and resets on the feet. Fernando slips on a spin kick, that was just silly, and the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Fernando

ROUND TWO: Calf kick from Fernando, then another one. Another calf kick from Fernando, that left leg of Tobias is starting to feel those. Intercepting knee from Fernando then a right hand. Fernando checks a calf kick. Calf kick from Fernando then Tobias blocks a high kick. They just feint away the final seconds of the round.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Fernando as Tobias did almost nothing offensively all round, 20-17 Fernando overall

ROUND THREE: Fernando lands a hard calf kick to start the round. Tobias swings a few punches but can’t quite land. Fernando lands a jab then a heavy calf kick. Inside leg kick from Fernando. Tobias moves forward but walks into a hard knee to the liver, he backs off then sinks down and that’ll get the ref to step in.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Lucas Fernando via TKO, knee to the body, at 1:10 of Round 3

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Fernando for his work. Mic time for Fernando and the translator, he thanks God then puts over his team. Asked about the future he puts over the UFC brass and will fight whoever. What a sad answer to that question.

Vicente Luque has been with the UFC since 2015, he’s 3-3 in his last six though but did choke out Kelvin Gastelum his last time out. Luque is trying to build his first winning streak since 2021 and stave off retirement talk. Tresean Gore has gone 3-4 in the UFC but did win his last fight and now tries to build another winning streak. Very close one here, -115 on Gore to -105 for Luque which means technically we’re in a pick ’em scenario.

Middleweight Bout: Tresean Gore (6-4, 186 lbs.) vs. Vicente Luque (24-12-1, 186 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Gore is an inch taller while Luque has half an inch of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Calf kick from Luque, Gore returns it. A few jabs go back and forth. Luque lands a calf kick. Gore with another jab. Right hand from Luque then a left hook that seems to bother Gore as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Luque but could go either way

ROUND TWO: Gore with a comically bad wheel kick. Luque lands a left hook while bulling forward. We get a firefight, Gore reaches for a tie up and Luque immediately grabs a d’arce choke. Luque is trying to adjust the choke, he doesn’t quite have the angle right and has to bail on it. Gore wrestles up into a clinch. Luque tries a harai goshi, Gore smothers that and lands punches from the ride. Gore grabs a choke but loses it and gets on top in half guard. Full mount for Gore and he lands an elbow. Luque gets half guard back then Gore lands an elbow. Gore slips back to full mount and lands an elbow. Luque gets half guard back but he’s struggling to actually get motion going from bottom. Gore attacks an arm triangle, moves to mount with it then gets to the other side. Luque is able to slip free and gets half guard. Elbow from Gore. The round will end with Gore moving to side control.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Gore, 19-19 overall

SCORECARD: 10-9 Luque but an uneventful round that could go either way, 29-28 Luque overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Tresean Gore via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)

No problem with any of that. Gore gets an abbreviated interview as he and Luque share a long several moments together and pray. Gore says he thinks he’s getting better and getting sober and right with God has been helping. He mentions he lost some of his lower teeth on that last flying knee, then shows off the gaps in his smile. His cornermen are holding one of his teeth, get that thing in milk and they might be able to replant it.

Donte Johnson is undefeated including two wins in the UFC, the more recent one was a lack luster split decision though and now he’s trying to regain a bit of hype with a more impressive victory. Eric McConico has traded wins and losses while going 2-2 in the UFC, he did win his last fight though and is trying to get his first UFC winning streak going. The odds are with Johnson at -320 to McConico’s +250.

Middleweight Bout: Donte Johnson (8-0, 184.5 lbs.) vs. Eric McConico (11-4-1, 186 lbs.)

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Donte Johnson via KO, punch, at 1:38 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Johnson for his work. Mic time for Johnson, he does some rhyming and testifies of Christ. He says he just did what God told him to do here as he talks us through the finish, and he thanks God again then puts over McConico. Asked about the future he says he’s looking at fighting to welterweight next then win titles at welterweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight. That’s. . . ambitious.

Charles Johnson has had a very odd run thus far, he’s 8-7 in the UFC but has some impressive stoppage wins over Joshua Van and Lone’er Kavanagh but also has losses to Alex Perez and most recently a Suloev stretch submission loss to Asu Almabayev. Johnson is trying to avoid another losing streak and start showing more consistency which has eluded him thus far. Eduardo Chapolin took this fight during fight week when Jose Ochoa fell out of the bout, hence the catchweight, but he has won his last couple of fights and win here would be a great way to announce his arrival in the UFC. Given the short notice replacement it’s not surprising to see Johnson as the favorite at -120 while the even +100 on Chapolin shows the newcomer a lot of respect.

Catchweight Bout: Charles Johnson (19-9, 129.5 lbs.) vs. Eduardo Chapolin (15-2, 129.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Johnson is an inch and a half taller with three inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Both men doing some stance switching as they move around. Johnson hits the body then Chapolin lands a right hand. Calf kick from Johnson. Johnson lands a jab, he complains of an eye poke but the ref tells him to fight on. Both men fire punches in close. Bit of a one two from Johnson. Chapolin hits a takedown into half guard. Illegal knee from Chapolin as Johnson was on his knees so we’ve got a time out. As we look at the replay we do get a look at Johnson getting poked in the eye earlier, and that knee was definitely illegal. Chapolin was trying to pull back the knee so it wasn’t full power but it definitely landed illegally. Johnson can continue, the ref takes a point and I’m happy enough with that. We’re back to fighting after 1:40 or so. Both men show kicks. Johnson hits a takedown and lands a punch as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 9-9 DRAW after the point deduction

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves again. Johnson lands a calf kick. Chapolin pushes forward now and both men miss punches. Right hand to the body from Johnson then a left hook. Johnson with a jab. They trade front kicks. A front kick from Johnson hurts Chapolin, Chapolin swings back but that hurt him. Right hand from Johnson then he sprawls away from a takedown and moves to the ride. Johnson with punches as they stand then he jumps to the back and grabs a Scottish Twister as Chapolin tried to roll into him and that gets the tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Charles Johnson via Submission, Scottish/Japanese Twister, at 1:36 of Round 3

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Johnson for his work. Mic time for Johnson, he talks about working on his game and puts over his team. He plays with the crowd then talks us through the finish then sends love to the family and friends of Allan Nascimento who passed away last week.

Chidi Njokuani has gone 3-2 since returning to welterweight but he’s on a two fight losing streak and really needs to halt that skid here. Joel Alvarez just had a four fight winning streak broken by Yaroslav Amosov, now he’s trying to avoid his first ever losing streak. The odds are with Alvarez at -325, which is a tad heavy to my eye but that makes +260 on Njokuani a tempting little wager.

Not sure which round Alvarez might have won. No interview for Njokuani.

Edson Barboza is an old warhorse at this point, he’s 40 and has been fighting through the trenches of lightweight and featherweight since his UFC debut in 2010. Barboza is just 2-5 in his last seven fights though and is on a three fight losing streak, if he loses again here it could well be time for him to hang up the gloves. Esteban Ribovics has gone 4-3 in the UFC, most recently losing to Mateusz Gamrot and now he’s looking to score the most recognizable name he’s faced and avoid his first losing streak. Ribovics is a large favorite at -750 to +525 on Barboza.

Mic time for Ribovics along with the translator, he puts over Barboza as a legend and says it was an honor to fight with him. He says it’s hard to fight someone you respect and admire like that. Asked about the future he wants someone close to the top 15 and feels he has a lot more to show.

They talk with the retiring Barboza too, he’s very emotional but gets a ton of love from the crowd. 16 years in the UFC, and some stretches of fighting tremendous opponents. He says he’s given his best every day in every fight he had, and he’s just thankful for everything. He lays down the gloves and shares a moment with his family in the cage.

Mansur Abdul-Malik has gone 3-1-1 in the UFC, most recently he suffered his first loss when he was stopped by surging talent Yousri Belgaroui and now he’s trying to rebound while reminding everyone why he’s a hyped prospect. Dustin Stoltzfus has gone just 3-7 in the UFC and is on a two fight losing streak, he’s here to put over Abdul-Malik but will be trying to buck those expectations and start crawling his UFC record towards the .500 mark. The odds are solidly with Abdul-Malik at -700 to a +500 comeback on Stoltzfus.

Middleweight Bout: Mansur Abdul-Malik (9-1-1, 186 lbs.) vs. Dustin Stoltzfus (16-8, 185 lbs.)

Gillian Robertson has been with the UFC since 2017, she’s finally getting her first title shot here on the back of a five fight winning streak. Though, fun fact, those five opponents are a combined 0-19 in their last several UFC fights. Still Robertson had to take the long way to get to this title shot and will be looking to claim the belt. Mackenzie Dern is the UFC strawweight champion, something the promotion had been angling for for a while but once Zhang Weili left the division she was able to claim the vacant belt in her last fight. She really wanted the submission but Robertson defended well. To close she plays a bit with the crowd.

Ian Machado Garry has gone 10-1 in the UFC and brings a two fight winning streak into his first title fight. Garry might not be terribly popular with the fans but a win here would be the best of his career and could set him up to start a real run as champion given his young age and defensive fighting style. Islam Makhachev is the UFC welterweight champion, the former lightweight champion including holding the record for most consecutive title defenses in that weight class, and is currently tied with the great Anderson Silva for longest UFC winning streak at 16. Makhachev won the welterweight title his last time out and looks to become one of the few double champs to defend both of his belts, to break a record that many of us thought might be untouchable, and continue pushing his name up the ranks in the greatest of all time conversation. Makhachev is the favorite here at -370 while +290 on Garry might tempt a few bettors out there.

A somewhat pedestrian way to break one of the great records in MMA history but Makhachev got it done. Mic time for the champ, he puts over Garry and thanks him for the fight. He says this was among the toughest fights he’s had, but maybe not quite as tough as the first Volkanovski fight. Asked about fighting at welterweight he definitely can feel the weight class difference but his game still works. He thanks the fans for their support to close.

Garry gets some mic time too, he puts over Makhachev and makes no excuses for losing tonight. He puts over his team and family and feels proud of all he’s done, he’s only 28 and has another 10 years still in the sport so he’s going to take this and get better. There are guys like Volkanovski and Gaethje who are 38 years old and champions, this might be a setback but he’ll keep getting better and has plenty of time to get the belt. He thanks all his fans, both of them, but he’s still a proud man and tells all the haters he’ll be back.
