411 Box Office Report: Flight Risk Takes #1, Presence Falls Short

Flight Risk jumped to the top of the box office in its opening weekend. The Mel Gibson-directed action thriller topped the weekend with $12 million, slightly outperforming the $10 million expectations for it coming into the frame. It’s an okay start for a moderately-budgeted film and gives Lionsgate its second #1 of 2025 so far, a nice turnaround from its disastrous back half of 2024.
While $12 million wouldn’t normally be a lot for a Gibson film starring Mark Wahlberg, it’s pretty solid considering Lionsgate very modestly marketed the movie and gave it a mid-January release. The buzz around it certainly didn’t help; critic reviews are bad at a 21% aggregated average on Rotten Tomatoes and the world of mouth wasn’t great at a 63% RT audience score and a C CinemaScore. Compare that to Lionsgate’s other January action thriller, Den of Thieves 2, which had a B+ and a 79% audience RT rating. But it’s new material at the box office and that was enough for filmgoers.
It’s not yet clear if the film will be able to reach a profit before it leaves theaters (or at least before it hits PVOD). The film cost $25 million and the poor word of mouth means that it’s not likely to have great box office legs. International receipts have yet to come in but they will need those to be strong as the domestic total is likely to be around $30 million.
Mufasa: The Lion King continued its strong run as it was down just 28% in its sixth weekend with $8.7 million. The Disney sequel is now up to $221.1 million domestically and $626.7 million worldwide, numbers that would have seemed inconceivable when it opened to just $35 million. It’s a full-on box office success against a $200 million budget and should close out with around $240 million.
One Of Them Days had a great hold after a strong opening weekend as it brought in $8 million in the sophomore frame. That’s down 32% from its opening weekend. The film is performing like comedies used to and is at $25.1 million domestically against a budget of $14 million, putting it well on the path to box office profit for Sony Pictures. Expect this one to make it as high as $40 million, a major success in a genre that has struggled at the box office in recent years.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 scored $5.5 million in its sixth weekend, which was a 36% drop from last weekend’s three-day numbers. The video game threequel is now at $226.1 million domestically and $446.6 million worldwide, big numbers against a $122 million budget, and is still on course for $235 million to $240 million. A fourth film is already in development and set for a 2027 release date.
Moana 2 continues to rake in the cash, down just 28% in its ninth weekend to $4.3 million. The animated film now stands at $450 million domestically and $1.026 billion worldwide, on course for around $460 million domestically. The budget was $150 million.
Steven Soderbergh’s journey into the supernatural faltered out of the gate as Presence brought in $3.4 million. That’s below the mid-single digits start that was expected and reps the lowest wide release start of his career, “beating” the $3.7 million opening of 2018’s psychological thriller Unsane.
Soderbergh is someone with name value when it comes to star-studded affairs, but he has traditionally struggled more when trying to open smaller films. In Presence’s case, NEON gave it a solid marketing campaign but it just didn’t draw interest even with strong critical regard at 87% on RT. Audiences who saw it were not keen on it; it has a C+ CinemaScore and a low 57% RT audience rating.
Presence isn’t likely to stick in the top 10 very long, but NEON isn’t sweating it because the film cost them just $2 million to produce. They’ll hope that it finds more of an audience on home viewing, and in theaters it will be in fine shape with a probable $6 million to $8 million final take.
Meanwhile, Wolf Man dive bombed in its second weekend as it slipped a rough 69% to $3.4 million. Leigh Whannel’s latest Universal horror reimagining is not in good shape as it stands at $17.8 million domestically and $27.7 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. That’s the bad word of mouth coming out against it. At this rate the film should close at around $25 million domestically and is unlikely to be profitable before it exits theaters.
A Complete Unknown held up well again, slipping just 17% to $3.1 million in its tenth weekend thanks to a host of Oscar nominations. The Bob Dylan biopic has now $62.9 million domestically. International grosses are just standing to come in now with a worldwide total of $67 million. It should continue to deliver decent numbers, particularly as it expands overseas, and domestically will top out at around $70 million against a $70 million budget.
Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera is fading quicker than its predecessor, down 54% to $3 million in its third weekend. The action-thriller now has $31.9 million stateside and $40.5 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. It will still be in okay shape thanks to international, while domestically it will finish around $38 million.
The Brutalist rose into the top 10 as it expanded to 1,180 theaters on the back of its 10 Oscar nods. The lengthy period drama is doing well enough with $2.8 million this weekend, bringing it to $9.3 million in the US and $11.5 million worldwide against a $9 million budget. Depending on how A24 handles its platforming, it should make its money back easily here.
Next weekend will see a new #1 as Universal DreamWorks open Dog Man, which is looking at around $25 million or so. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. gives us a new thriller in Companion, which should open a bit over $10 million, and Briarcliff’s Valiant One is looking at low single digits.
