Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett isn’t retiring just yet. The Academy Award winner is set to return to the How To Train Your Dragon franchise, this time in the live-action format. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Blanchett signed a deal to reprise her role as Valka, the mother of Hiccup (Mason Thames), and the wife of village leader, Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), in the live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2.
The 56-year-old Blanchett joins Butler as another returning voice actor from the animated franchise who will now also get to portray her character in the live-action format. Dean DeBlois, who worked on the original animated trilogy and directed last year’s live-action How To Your Dragon remake, will be back as writer and director for the upcoming sequel. He’s also executive producing the feature.
The live-action remake hit theaters in June 2025, grossing over $262 million domestically and over $636 million worldwide. The franchise is based on the best-selling book series written by Cressida Cowell.

Valka is Hiccup’s long-lost mother, who was believed to have died in a dragon attack. Cate Blanchett previously voiced the character in the second and third animated movies.
Marc Platt is producing How To Train Your Dragon 2 through his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, president of Marc Platt Productions. The sequel is slated for a June 11, 2027 release in theaters.
