The cinematographer of Alec Baldwin’s latest movie is dead and the director is injured due to a prop gun fired by Baldwin. The New York Times reports that the shooting happened at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico on the set of Baldwin’s new movie Rust on Thursday.

Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office Juan Rios confirmed that police are investigating the incident and that Baldwin pulled the trigger on the gun. The circumstances are not yet clear; Rios said that the incident happened during a scene that was either being rehearsed or filmed.

“We’re trying to determine right now how and what type of projectile was used in the firearm,” he said. No one has currently been charged in connection with the incident.

Halyna Hutchins, the director of photography, was flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. She died there. Director Joel Souza was taken to CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe.

Hutchens was the cinematographer on the Joe Manganiello superhero-themed drama Archenemy, which released last year, as well as Pollyanna McIntosh’s 2019 sequel to The Woman titled Darlin’. Souza previously wrote and directed the 2017 film Break Night and 2019’s Crown Vic, per IMDB.

Rust is a Western that also stars Travis Fimmel, Jensen Ackles, Frances Fisher, and more. It is described as follows:

“A 13 year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880’s Kansas, goes on the run with his long estranged grandfather after he’s sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.”

On behalf of 411, our condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Halyna Hutchins and our best wishes to Joel Souza for a full recovery.
