The CW Orders Charmed & Roswell Reboots to Series, Passes on Supernatural Spinoff
The CW has ordered two widely-reported on reboots to series for next season while passing on yet another Supernatural spinoff. TV Line reports that the network has given series orders for their reboots of Charmed and Roswell, while deciding not to move forward with Wayward Sisters.
The Charmed reboot is written by Jane the Virgin’s Jennie Snyder Urman, Amy Rardin and Jessica O’Toole and offers an updated take on the 1990s to 200s series. It centers around three sisters — Mel (Melonie Diaz), Macy (Madeleine Mantock) and Maggie (Sarah Jeffrey). The logline reads: “After the tragic death of their mother, three sisters in a college town are stunned to discover they are witches. Soon this powerful threesome must stand together to fight the everyday and supernatural battles that all modern witches must face: from vanquishing powerful demons to toppling the patriarchy.”
Roswell reimagines the sci-fi series that ran for three seasons: two on The WB and one on UPN. The new version centers around Liz Ortecho (Jeanine Mason), a jaded biomedical researcher and the daughter of undocumented immigrants who is haunted by a tragic incident. She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush (Nathan Parsons): He’s an alien. Michael Trevino and Tyler Blackburn co-star.
Wayward Sisters would have focused on the recurring Supernatural characters ofd Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster) and others. The prospective show was introduced as a backdoor pilot this season, but the network decided not to go forward with the show. It is the second Supernatural spinoff not to go to series following 2014’s Supernatural: Bloodlines.
