Edgar Wright is in talks to direct a new Barbarella starring Sydney Sweeney. Deadline reports that Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho) is in discussions to direct the new film, with Jane Goldman and Honey Ross in talks to write the script. Sweeney is attached to star in the film, which is still in development at this point.

The report notes that Wright has been considering the project for a while but only committed to develop the project at first. Sony is behind the project. No word on the story yet.

The original film, based on the French comic series of the same name, was directed by Roger Vadim and released in 1968. The campy sci-fi adventure comedy starred Jane Fonda as an astronaut in the 41th century who tries to put a stop to the plans of an evil scientist trying to bring evil to the galaxy. The film became a cult classic and a landmark of pop culture, with Fonda’s character becoming one of the best known sex symbols of 1960s cinema.
