As we reported last month, Kevin Hart stepped down as the host of this year’s Academy Awards once he faced backlash for anti-LGBTQ comments he made years ago.

Hart made the comments in old tweets. In one, he said: “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.’

He also previously said in a comedy special that one of his biggest fears is his son being gay. He later apologized to the LGBTQ community and voluntarily stepped down as host. He later said that the criticism was a “malicious attack on his character” as people brought up old comments from 2008. However TMZ reports he made homophobic comments years after that.

TMZ reports that Ellen DeGeneres is now facing backlash for dismissing the people who criticized Hart as “haters” and “trolls”, adding that it’s Hart’s right to host the Oscars. She made the comments on a recent episode of her talk show, which featured Hart as a guest. Comments online, particularly those from the community, called Ellen’s defense a “massive f***ing betrayal.”

One person tweeted that DeGeneres does not speak for all gay people. They wrote: “To Ellen. Unfortunately Mrs Ellen, this ain’t your fight. The harm is done and this man hasn’t learned.

At the end of the show, Hart implied that he may reconsider his decision to step down as host of the awards. He said: “You have put a lot of things on my mind. Leaving here, I’m promising you I’m evaluating this conversation … Let me assess, just sit in the space and really think.
