The 73rd annual Emmy Awards saw a battle between HBO/HBO Max and Netflix end in a photo finish as The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, and Ted Lasso took home the top awards of the night. The Crown dominated the evening with seven wins, taking home every drama award including Best Drama, Best Actor (Josh O’Connor), Best Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Supporting Actor (Tobias Menzies), Best Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson), Best Directing (Jessica Hobbs), and Best Writing (Peter Morgan).

While The Crown was the tour de force for the night, Netflix did pick up a few other wins with The Queen’s Gambit picking up Best Limited or Anthology Series and Best Directing for the same (Scott Frank). Netflix also claimed a win for Best Actor in a Limited Series/Anthology for Ewan McGregor in Halston, upsetting the odds’ favorite in Paul Bettany for WandaVision. Netflix ended up with 10 total wins, the most of the telecast.

Meanwhile, HBO and HBO Max spread its wins out more with nine total wins, three to comedy series Hacks and three for Mare of Easttown, as well as two for Last Week Tonight and one for Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You. Easttown and Queen’s Gambit traded wins in Limited Series/Anthology, with the HBO series taking home Best Actor (Evan Peters), Best Actress (Kate Winslet), and Best Supporting Actress (Julianne Nicholson).

Disney+ found itself almost fully shut out of the awards, with only a win for Hamilton for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special. WandaVision went home winless in terms of the telecast, though it had won three Creative Arts Emmys for technical categories as did The Mandalorian.

As usual, the ceremony was dominated by cable and streaming; only one broadcast network won with Saturday Night Live winning Best Sketch Variety Series.
