What Are the Expectations for Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie?

Taika Waititi Star Wars

If one thing stays consistent is that there will always be Star Wars news to talk about. Rumors, casting, fan reaction, you name it, it’s a franchise that keeps on giving.

Take the announcement that Taika Waititi will be the director of a new Star Wars movie. That gives us all sorts of possibilities…like what the fans will come to like or hate about this news.

The news isn’t a shocker as the this has been a strong rumor since January. Waititi has been a hot property for a while, including winning an Oscar for his Jojo Rabbit screenplay.

And Waititi is familiar with the Star Wars stands since this will be his second outing for the franchise, after directing the first season finale of The Mandalorian for Disney+.

Funny enough, when he was asked about whether he would want to make a Star Wars movie back in February, Waititi told Variety, “I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

Not the most exciting wish but it works.

With Rise of Skywalker making the rounds on Disney+, a slow down in Star Wars output (which doesn’t really feel like it), and some director changes, the future of the franchise is morphing.

No word on how or if this changes The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s maybe or maybe not separate trilogy project. The last word was that he was still in discussions with LucasFilm.

With The Mandalorian’s being a huge success, look for the future to be TV influenced with the theatrical releases focused on epic scaled events.

Mark my word, though that the day will come when Disney does a massive Star Wars/Marvel crossover. They’ll have Chewbacca and Rocket Raccoon know each other, opening up the door for adventures and go to town, counting the money, laughing at the love/backlash.

Going back to the Waititi movie, it should be one of new characters and that opens the doors of possibility that they’ll mine the great archives of Stars Wars lore, including material that is longer longer deemed canon.
With his taste and personality, I’d expect nothing less.

What are your thoughts on the future movie?
