Fox Lands Baywatch Reboot Series
Fox is heading back to the 1990s days of summer fun, picking up the Baywatch reboot. Deadline reports that the network has landed the reboot of the beach series with a “significant” script plus penalty commitment.
The reboot will be co-produced from Fremantle and Fox Entertainment and will written & showrun by Lara Olson. The “action-packed” reboot is described as follows:
“Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”
Olsen will executive produce the series alongside Baywatch creators Michael Berk, Greg Bonann and Doug Schwartz.
The original series was a landmark show of the 1990s and revitalized the career of David Hasselhoff, while also turning Pamela Anderson into a household name. The NBC series was canceled after just one seeason but moved to syndication when the producers bought back the rights and turned it into a worldwide hit. It ran for 10 seasons before being retooled as Baywatch: Hawaii for two seasons from 1999 to 2001.
A film adaptation of the series starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron released in 2017 and, despite negative reviews, became a hit with $177.9 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.
