AJ Styles recently revealed his favorite time period of his TNA run and shared a story of being in Randy Savage’s last match. Styles was with TNA from the start up until 2014 and was considered the face of the company for a large portion of that run.
The WWE Hall of Famer spoke with Cody Rhodes on What Do You Wanna Talk About? about that era. You can see highlights below:
On Being Part of Macho Man’s Last Match:
“Wasn’t it me and Jeff Hardy wrestling — I think it was, I could be wrong, I’m trying to remember — Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Macho just comes down? Well, he was supposed to run down. But he did his own Macho Man, turning around, walking down, ‘Brother.’ And like he was supposed to run down and save us, I think.
“So yeah, it was comical because I remember, we’re all sitting around going over the match. And Macho Man is there, and I’m in there with these legends. Like, I look at Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, I’m like, ‘Whoa, I’m in the match with these guys.’ And Scott is trying to tell Macho Man what’s going on. And every time he starts to talk, Macho’d be like, ‘Hey, brother,’ and start talking to somebody else. And then, ‘Oh, sorry.’ And then Scott would try to continue, and then [Macho is] like, ‘Hey,’ and turn around. And finally Scott was like, ‘Man, I’m not gonna tell you this anymore.’ I was like, ‘Dang. They argue just like regular people.’ But to me, they were such these unbelievably huge stars. I just didn’t see it. And it was just so funny to me that like, ‘Oh, they’re regular people. Okay, cool.'”
On His Favorite Era Of His TNA Run:
“Oh, man, it was exciting, you know, when the whole — We started growing in Orlando and going to, something big was happening. We could all tell. And then we get on Spike Television, which was huge. And then there’s Kurt Angle and Christian Cage. Like, we’re growing. People are coming from WWE to TNA. They want to be there. I’m like, ‘All right, this is getting pretty awesome, dude. Like, we’re moving. We’re getting ratings. We’re doing pretty well.’ You know, that was some great times there.”
