Hellboy Earns R Rating – ‘Bloody Violence, Gore Throughout’
Fans who were hoping for a more adult take on Hellboy than Guillermo del Toro’s series have some good news: the reboot has earned an R rating. The MPAA has given the Neil Marshall-directed film the 17-plus rating, citing “strong bloody violence and gore throughout, and language.”
The move represents studios’ increased willingness to move outside of the PG-13 rating for comic book adaptations after Deadpool and Logan blew the door wide open. Marshall had previously promised that the film would go back to the Mike Mignola’s source material, calling it “More violent and more bloody. We weren’t making it with handcuffs on.”
David Harbour plays the titular character in the new film, which also stars Milla Jovovich, Daniel Dae Kim, and Sasha Lane. It opens on April 12th.
