Hugh Jackman To Play Wolverine In Deadpool 3, Release Date Set
Ryan Reynolds has had his wish granted, as Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine one more time for Deadpool 3. Reynolds posted a video to his Twitter account on Tuesday in which he and Jackman (in Reynolds’ usual tongue-in-cheek style) revealed that the latter start will reprise the role he retired from after 2017’s Logan.
You can check out the video below, which also reveals that the third film will arrive on September 6th, 2024. It starts with Reynolds on the couch, talking about how he tries to make Deadpool 3 special for his first appearance in the MCU but failed.
“Hey everyone,” he says. “We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says in the video. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I — I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”
Jackman then walks across the background with an apple in hand, and Reynolds says, “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Jackman replies, “Yeah, sure, Ryan” and goes upstairs.
Jackman has played the role in live action since 2000 and is (aside from Troye Sivan as young Logan in X-Men: Origins – Wolverine) the only actor to do so. He said many times that Logan would be his last time as the character, though Reynolds has often said he wanted Jackman to come back for one more time so they could properly be on screen as the two characters together, as opposed to the mouth-sewn-shut version of Deadpool that was presented in Origins.
