Jordan Peele is lining up his next film, and it’s a team-up with Issa Rae for a sci-fi/horror film that has a distinctly Pet Sematary-like feel. Deadline reports that the Get Out director and the creator of Insecure are partnering for Sinkhole. Universal has landed the film in a low seven-figure deal, beating out ten studios and several talent/filmmaker teams for the rights to the short story by Leyna Krow that is being adapted.

Sinkhole is being described as “a thought-provoking genre movie that engages with questions of female perfection and identity.” The story centers on “a young family that moves into its dream home despite the gaping sinkhole in the backyard. The mysterious sinkhole manages to fix broken and destroyed things. However, the story asks, what if that thing is a person?”

Rae will produce with her Issae Rae Productions partners Montrel McKay and Sara Rostogi alongside Monkepaw’s Peele and Win Rosenfield. Universal SVP of Production Sara Scott will oversee the film for the studio.

Krow wrote the story set in Spokane, where she grew up, and was inspired to write the film based on a project by local writers to write short stories based on the theme of “I Married a Monster.” According to Deadline, Krow “wanted to explore the notion of female perfection and was particularly interested in the ways society and cultures can promote the concept of women as imperfect or broken. Her story has the trappings of a grounded, psychological sci-fi/horror, but the subplot is a commentary on the human condition through the lens of female identity.”
