Collider reports that Jordan Peele will produce a remake of Wes Craven’s 1991 film The People Under the Stairs, which turns 29 years old tomorrow.

The film is an urban horror film about a young boy and two adult thieves that are trapped in a house belonging to a bizarre couple. They soon discover there is more than they expected from the demented pair. The film was praised at the time for its satire and social commentary.

Win Rosenfeld will also produce through Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. It’s unknown if Peele or Rosenfeld will write, but Peele is not expected to direct. The two had a had in writing the Candyman reboot with director Nia DaCosta.

In an interesting note, Craven was developing a TV series based on his film with Syfy prior to his death in 2015. At the time, it was described as “a contemporary Downton Abbey meets Amityville Horror” that would’ve followed “a young woman [who] goes missing at the grand Robeson Family Manor” and the “centuries-old horrors that lie deep within the estate.”
