Letitia Wright Is Confident An All-Women Avengers Film Will Happen
Letitia Wright is feeling pretty good about the odds of her Shuri teaming up with other women of the MCU in a new film. Wright spoke with Yahoo! Entertainment for a new interview promoting the upcoming Amazon anthology series Small Axe and was asked about her role as Shuri in the Marvel film franchise. Wright was an instant fan-favorite after Black Panther and said that she’s been very moved to see how her character has connected with female audiences.
“It was always a dream of mine to play someone that can be impactful not only for Black women but also just for women around the world and young people, too,” she said. “To be able to have a combination of people and audience members who are so thrilled and appreciative of Shuri is a good feeling. I feel like I contributed something positive in the world.”
Several of Marvel’s actresses have talked about wanting to have a team-up film among the their characters, and Wright cited the support of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and EVP of Production Victoria Alonzo in saying that she expects it will happen at some point.
“I don’t think we have to fight for it,” she said. “Victoria Alonso is very strong about spearheading it, alongside Kevin. It’s only a matter of time before they do it.”
That said, the film may not happen for a while as Marvel has a busy Phase Four that has been delayed due to the pandemic and currently runs through early 2022 and includes both film and TV shows. Phase Five, perhaps?
Wright was asked who she’d like to see in the lineup of the potential film and named Danai Gurira (Okoye), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Angela Bassett (Ramonda), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), and Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel). She noted, “Definitely have to have Captain Marvel, definitely.”
