Mads Mikkelsen In Talks to Replace Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3, New Release Date Set
Warner Bros. is looking to get a little Hannibal Lector into their Fantastic Beasts franchise, with Mads Mikkelsen reported in talks to replace Johnny Depp. Deadline reports that Mikkelson, who starred as the titular character in NBC’s Hannibal is in early negotiations to take over the role of Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3.
Depp starred as Grindelwald in the first two films, but has exited the franchise amid scandal after he lost his libel lawsuit against The Sun over their claims he abused Amber Heard. The judge in the case found “substantial evidence” that at least 12 of the 14 incidents described did take place. Depp plans to appeal the suit.
Mikkelson has previously seen blockbuster action, having played the villainous Kaecilius in Doctor Strange and Galen Erso in Star Wars: Rogue One. THR reports that Depp’s contract was a “Pay or Play” contract, meaning he will get his full salary.
In addition, Warner Bros. has set a new released date for the film. Initially set for November 12th, 2021, Fantastic Beasts 3 will now open on July 15th, 2022 per Variety.
