Giancarlo Esposito says that the upcoming second season of The Mandalorian will look deeper into his character Moff Gideon’s legendary Darksaber. Esposito spoke with Deadline for a new interview on Tuesday and teased that the new season, coming in October, will provide viewers with more insight into his character and the weapon he holds.

“You’ll see more of the darksaber, you’ll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world,” he said. “Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It’s a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later… (The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon’s past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together.”

Esposito also discussed his work in the role, noting that he inspiration from the late Peter Cushing’s work as Grand Moff Tarkin. “You could always read his mind through his eyes,” Esposito said. “I took a look at the imagery of this supreme chancellor, which really helped me. He is a supreme being in a sense. He knows it, but not everyone in the universe knows it.”

The Mandalorian has not only been a big hit commercially for Disney+, it’s been a critical favorite as well. The show was nominated for 15 Primetime Emmys this week including Best Drama and Esposito for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
