Matt Reeves’ The Batman Sets 2021 Release Date, Ben Affleck Not Starring

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has an official release date, but not a star as Ben Affleck will not play the title role. Deadline reports that the film is set to release on June 25th, 2021. Affleck will not be playing the Dark Knight, as the film will be focusing on a younger version of the character.

It is worth noting that this is not necessarily the end of Affleck’s run as Batman entirely. Because the film looks at a younger Bruce Wayne, Affleck could conceivably return if the film returns to later continuity. Deadline’s report notes thatr Affleck “worked hard on The Batman story, but knew he wasn’t the right one for this particular version.”

Reeves took over from Affleck in the writer/director chair in February of 2017. The site reports that the film will not be based on Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One as previous reports suggested. Affleck took to Twitter and commented about the news:
