Joseph Kosinski’s new Miami Vice reboot has some major star power attached, per The Hollywood Reporter. The upcoming feature has locked down Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as its leads, as they will be portraying the new versions of Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett.

The new feature, titled Miami Vice ’85, is based on the 1980s NBC series, focusing on the two undercover Miami cops. THR notes that the actors have signed on for the roles after “long circling the project in negotiations.”

The new movie version is reportedly inspired by the original police procedural’s famous pilot episode and first season. However, unlike Michael Mann’s 2006 theatrical reboot, the new movie will be a period feature set in the 1980s. It’s due for release in August 2027 from Universal Pictures.

The 2006 movie starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the Crockett and Tubbs roles. However, the film was a critical and commercial flop, grossing only $63 million domestically and $163 million worldwide off of a reported $150 million budget.

Don Johnson famously portrayed Crockett in the original series, with Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs. The original show, created by Anthony Yerkovich, aired for five seasons and 114 episodes from 1984 to 1990 on NBC.

Of course, Michael B. Jordan is fresh off his Oscar win for last year’s Sinners. He’s also producing and starring in a theatrical reboot of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios. He stars in the movie opposite Adria Arjona and Kenneth Branagh, and it arrives in theaters on March 7, 2027.

Butler recently received an Oscar nomination for his role as the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie, released in 2023. He also recently starred in Dune: Part Two and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing.

Production on the feature is slated to kick off later this year. Kosinski is riding high at the moment, coming off two huge back-to-back blockbusters with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and last year’s F1, starring Brad Pitt.

Kosinski directs from a script by Dan Gilroy. It’s being produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski. Miami Vice ’85 is due out in theaters on Aug. 6, 2027.
