The director of the original Space Jam is no fan of its sequel, taking shots at Space Jam: A New Legacy in a new interview. Joe Pytka spoke with TMZ and weighed in on the just-released film, saying that he tried to watch it and it took him five tries to get through the movie.

Space Jam: A New Legacy released in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday, and overperformed with a $31.7 million start. Pytka said that he’s not mad that the new film exist but didn’t like it, saying that lead star LeBron James doesn’t measure up to Michael Jordan. He said that he thinks James is a great athlete and a good actor, but said, “The truth is that LeBron ain’t Michael.”

Pytka added that the film’s story doesn’t have any personal connection to James, while his film had a direct connection to Jordan because it related to his retiring from basketball to play baseball. Pytka called the soundtrack to the new film “insignificant” and didn’t like what happened to Bugs Bunny in the movie, and said that he didn’t like how Bugs had no connections to previous versions of him which they tried to do with the original.

Pytka noted that the sequel “looked like one of those fluffy dolls you buy at an airport gift shop to bring your kid when your business trip has taken too long.”
