Golden Globes 2022

The Golden Globes took place without an airing on Sunday night with The Power of the Dog, Succession, and West Side Story claiming the most wins. The The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the winners of the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards tonight, with the two films and the HBO series each winning three awards including the big award for their respective categories.

The Globes were not telecast this year after NBC announced In May that they would pulling the telecast due to the backlash over an expose from the LA Times about the HFPA’s financial practices and lack of diversity, which included having zero Black members. The HFPA announced a framework for reforms, but it was not enough concrete action for the network.

As a result, the awards were simply announced on Sunday night at a light low-key ceremony that did not involve celebrity presenters or nominees present. Only executives and members were present at the ceremony.

Power of the Dog won Best Motion Picture (Drama) as well as Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee and Best Director for Jane Campion. Meanwhile, West Side Story took home Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for Rachel Zegler, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Debose.

Elsewhere in the film categories, Nicole Kidman won Best Actress in a Drama for Beiing the Ricardos, with Will Smith winning Best Actor in a Drama for King Richard. Andrew Garfield won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Netflix’s tick…tick…BOOM!. Encanto won Best Animated Film, and Japanese drama Drive My Car took home Best Non-English Film.

Meanwhile in the TV categories, Succession won the award for Best Televsion Series (Drama) as well as Best Actor in a Drama Series for Jeremy Strong and Best Supporting Actress for Sarah Snook. HBO’s Hacks took home awards for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series for Jean Smart. MJ Rodriguez won Best Actress in a Drama Series for Pose and Jason Sudeikis won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series for Apple TV’s Ted Lasso.

Finally, the Golden Globe for Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a TV Movie went to Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad. Kate Winslet won Best Actress in this category for Mare of Easttown, while Michael Keaton won Best Actor for Dopesick.
