Variety reports that NBC has announced that they will not air the Golden Globes in 2022, putting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the tough position of either canceling the awards completely or holding it without a TV broadcast partner. Either way, they will need to quickly make changes to its membership and processes that many leaders in the industry have been demanding to ensure that NBC airs their show in 2023.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The HFPA has been in the midst of significant backlash for several months after the Los Angeles Times published an exposé about their financial practices and lack of diversity (including having zero Black members).

The HFPA did finally respond last week with a framework for reforms such as increasing the diversity of its members and restrictions on gifts that members could get. At the time, NBC released a statement saying they were encouraged by the HFPA’s plans, but the network apparently grew concerned that no timeline for the changes was issued and they wanted to see a comprehensive plan that would include doubling plus one the membership of the group so that new members outnumbered the old ones. NBC didn’t get to see this plan or get a timeline, leading to today’s decision.

In related news, Tom Cruise has returned all three of his Golden Globe awards to the HFPA, reports Deadline. Cruise won Best Actor for Jerry Maguire, Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July, and Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia.

The news follows Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia announcing that they were boycotting the Golden Globes until real changes were made.

NBC signed a broadcast license deal with the HFPA back in 2018 to air the Globes for $60 million.
