Sonic The Hedgehog Starts Strong, Targeting $64 Million Four-Day Weekend

Sonic The Hedgehog is looking like a hit, as it got off to a strong start on Friday and looks to be topping $64 million over four days. The Paramount adaptation of the famous video game opened with $21 million on Friday (including $3 million Thursday previews) and is tracking for $53.9 million through Sunday. If it overperforms on Saturday — a definite possibility considering its family appeal — the film could top Detective Pikachu’s $54.3 million start for the best opening weekend of a video game adaptation ever.

The film overcame a huge amount of negative early buzz acheive success, mostly surrounding the disastrous initial trailer in which Sonic’s design was roundly mocked online. Paramount decided to change the entire design around the character’s CGI and the results have clearly paid off. The film is moderately liked by critics with a 63% Rotten Tomatoes and audiences love it with an A CinemaScore. That audience reaction will be key for word of mouth over the weekend and whether it will beat Detective Pikachu’s total.

The excellent start was definitely needed, as the film cost a reported $95 million. $5 million of that was due to the redesign and delays.

Birds Of Prey will come in at #2 for the weekend with a three-day take of $17.6 million, down a solid 47%, and a four-day of $20 million. Our full box office report will be available tomorrow; you can see Jeffrey Harris’ review of Sonic here.
