Spider-Man: Far From Home Director Thinks a Venom and Spider-Man Film Crossover Would be Something Special
ComicBook.com recently interviewed Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts, who discussed a potential crossover between the MCU Spider-Man and Venom. While Sony Pictures produces both the recent Spider-Man film series (starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Venom, the latest iteration of Spider-Man has been firmly established as part of the MCU. Meanwhile, Venom/Eddie Brock (as portrayed by Tom Hardy) being a part of the MCU is a lot more murky.
When asked about the idea about the two Marvel-based film franchises crossing over, Watts seemed open toward the idea. Watts said in the interview, “I found VENOM to be so funny and I thought Tom Hardy was so great, I don’t know that they are so different. I think you put those two Toms together and you’re going to see something pretty special.”
Earlier this month, Spider-Man and Venom producer Amy Pascal reportedly stated that Sony has “big plans for Tom Holland to be a part of everything.” How that will play out, along with Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios’ involvement, remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said in a June interview that the decision is “probably” up to Sony whether the cinematic crossover will happen or not. Honestly, he seems a little less enthusiastic about the idea compared to Watts. Perhaps the memories of 2007’s lackluster Spider-Man 3, which also featured Venom, are still fresh in his mind. However, Feige did say on the idea, “It seems likely at some point.”
Another major issue is that Venom has been established in the films as having an origin and backstory independent of Spider-Man. Venom has also been established as a hero vigilante rather than a Spider-Man villain as the character originated in the pages of the Marvel comics.
Venom 2 is reportedly in the works, but it does not yet have a release date. Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 2. You can check out 411mania’s official review RIGHT HERE.
