Supergirl To End With Upcoming Season Six
Supergirl is set to make her last up, up, and away with the upcoming sixth season. The CW and producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions announced that they have decided to end the show with the upcoming season, which will premiere sometime next year.
The show is one of the many shows underneath the CW’s Arrowverse, now dubbed the “CWVerse” after Arrow ended its run at eight seasons last year. The show originally aired on CBS for its first season before moving to The CW for season two. The show, which stars Melissa Benoist as the titular character, existed as part of the Arrowverse in its own alternate world (Earth 3) before last season’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” unified all existing CW shows in one reality.
Supergirl has been a hit for The CW, ranking among the net’s top four shows throughout its first three seasons on the network. Last season the show ranked seventh out of 18 shows on The CW, ahead of other Arrowverse shows DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning but below The Flash, Arrow, and Batwoman.
Benoist addressed the end of the show on Instagram, posting:
“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.
She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.
I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”
