WonderCon 2022: Funko Booth Showcase

WonderCon 2022 - Funko

The folks at Funko were out in full force earlier this month at WonderCon 2022. Funko had a great booth set up during the convention dubbed Freddy’s Beach Bash Live from Pop Pier. Funko had a tropical beach-themed setup for this year’s convention, along with a nice helping of exclusive offerings for the convention.

Funko’s hot-ticket item for the weekend was the Funko Pop! Vinyl & Loungefly bag bundle for She-Ra: Princess of Power. Funko has become a nice fixture for major events. They were one of the few major companies to have a presence at Comic-Con Special Edition last November. This year’s WonderCon also marked the first time Funko had a booth presence at the convention.

The Funko booth at WonderCon was incredibly fun and festive. The beach theme was great, with live, appropriately-themed music, Tiki decorations, a limited-edition-themed tote bag, and various games and giveaways for attendees. The booth featured some very nice photo ops as well, with the life-size Freddy Funko.

I was informed by Funko’s Influencer Specialist Jennifer Hidalgo that Funko went with the tropical beach theme due to the convention being held in Southern California and wanting to usher in the spring-summertime season.

As per usual, Funko does a good job of bringing brands and fandoms together. Hidalgo also noted the importance of wanting to be at Comic-Con Special edition to support the dedicated Funko fans, called “Funatics.”

This year’s WonderCon Limited Edition Funko exclusives included shared exclusives with Amazon, Hot Topic, and Target. My personal favorites were the Pop! Vinyls Disney Donald Duck Shoulder Angel & Devil two-pack (Shared with Hot Topic) and Wall-E (Shared with Amazon). While touring the booth, there was actually a lifesize, remote-controlled Wall-E roving through the Anaheim Convention Center show floor, and he got a nice view of his exclusive Funko Pop! Vinyl.

Currently, Funko has two of its own brick-and-mortar locations: One in Washington, and another in Hollywood. Based on my chat with Jennifer Hidalgo, they weren’t quite ready to reveal any details on a possible third store, but she said, “Gotta stay tuned!” Also, Funko is hoping to continue having a presence at other major conventions for the rest of this year.

With regards to the Funko brand, Hidaldo summed the company up best herself, “There’s a saying that goes, “Come of the toys. Stay for the people.’ We have a lot of Funatics that have grown their own community amongst each other. And we don’t even call it a community, we’re a family. That’s why we have shirts that say Funko Family on it.” She continued, “I feel like for me personally, I’ve gained the most awesome friends just by being a collector, so the products come second to me.”

Thank you Jennifer Hidalgo for taking the time to give us the guided tour of the Funko booth and answering our questions. You can check out some more photos from Freddy’s Funko Beach Bash at WonderCon below:
