Backstage Update on AEW Status of Matt Sydal

The latest Fightful Select Answers Q&A has an update on AEW wrestler Matt Sydal, who hasn’t appeared in AEW since May 2024. Sydal last wrestled in July of this year, facing Ultimo Dragon in a losing effort at the ABC 15eme Festival International De Catch in Beziers, Frankreich, France.

According to Sean Ross Sapp, a rep for AEW confirmed that Sydal is still currently under contract. Sydal also reportedly underwent ankle surgery last year, and it’s said to be a process that he’s needed to get done for over a decade.

Sydal was defeated by Konosuke Takeshita in his last AEW match on Dynamite. Takeshita has since risen to greater heights, winning the AEW International Title and NJPW’s G1 Climax tournament. Earlier this month, Takeshita defeated Zack Sabre Jr. at King of Pro-Wrestling.

Matt Sydal, a former WWE Tag Team Champion, first signed with AEW in November 2020, debuting in the Casino Battle Royale at AEW All Out 2020.

During his career, Sydal has also competed in ROH, NJPW, and TNA (formerly Impact Wrestling), winning the ROH Tag Team Titles with Christopher Daniels, the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Titles twice with Ricochet, the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Titles, and the TNA X-Division Championship.
