Additional details have emerged following a controversial title change on last night’s NXT. The Women’s North American Title was on the line this past Tuesday, with Blake Monroe defending it against Thea Hail.

The closing moments of the match saw Hail hit her signature backwards drop from the second rope and pin Monroe. The finish led to an awkward silence, with Blake’s music also playing immediately after the pinfall before it was changed to Thea’s after the match official declared her as the winner.

PWInsider is now reporting that Thea Hail dethroning The Glamour was not the planned finish. The wrestling insider cited WWE sources, who claimed that Hail knocked the wind out of Blake Monroe with her backwards drop, and while the defending champion tried to get her shoulder up, it was too late. The report claims that Thea probably didn’t realize that she needed to give Blake a moment to recover before she went for the pin, and since the match officials are instructed to count the pinfall “as if they are legitimate,” he had no choice but to go ahead with the three-count.

Following the controversial title change, Blake Monroe confronted Thea Hail during her backstage interview and demanded a rematch, claiming that she never lost the match and that the referee must be fined. She later took to her X account to say that it was not the first time that she had been screwed.

Fightful Select also reported that the original plan was to have Blake retain the title and that there was a “scramble backstage” following the botched finish. You can read more about this HERE.

WWE is set to tape two episodes of NXT tonight at the Performance Center. It will be interesting to see if Monroe regains the title during these episodes.
