Thea Hail won the NXT Women’s North American Championship in a botched finish on this week’s WWE NXT, and a new report has some details on the reaction backstage. As noted, Hail won the title in a moment of confusion as she went for a pin attempt on Blake Monroe. The referee counted the fall when Monroe didn’t get her shoulder up. There was confusion in the moment and the bell didn’t ring. Monroe’s music even played initially before switching to Hail’s and she was announced as the winner.
As expected, the finish was not intended to be that way. Fightful Select reports that Monroe was supposed to retain the championship. Sources indicated that there was a “scramble backstage” during the botched finish and following. The site notes that the change caused issues, as there were creative plans in place that revolved specifically around Hail not being champion.
Sources noted that things were being changed immediately to adjust. The situation led to several people’s creative over the next couple of weeks being affected. It was said that steps would be taken as soon as tonight to make adjustments. The show featured a segment later in the show where Hail was emotional over the win. Jordynne Grace showed up to congratulate her and said Hail seemed to have figured it out before she did. Monroe then appeared and said that she will get a rematch and win the title back. She blamed the referee and said the ref should be fined.
Monroe’s on-screen assertion aside, it’s not immediately clear who got blamed for the matter as most were just trying to make needed adjustments to creative.
