Bret Hart Recalls Being Mobbed By Women During Match In Germany
Bret Hart says that he was so over in Germany that he got mobbed by dozens of women during a match there when he was Intercontinental Champion. The WWE Hall of Famer recalled the wild experience during an appearance on the Studio 1 Sports Channel while talking about his popularity in England and Germany. Hart recalled how he was put on first for a show in Germany and told Chief Jay Strongbow, who was overseeing the show, that it was a bad idea. He said that when he went out for his match, he found himself attacked by “50 or 60” women who pinned him down on his way to the ring.
Hart did not specify which match he was talking about, though it appears it would be against Dino Bravo at a European tour stop in Dortmund, Germany in April of 1992. Hart had just one the one tour in Europe when he was Intercontinental Champion, and the Dortmund show was the only match he went on first. For subsequent matches in Germany on that tour, he went on second to last or last. You can see highlights from his comments below:
On How Over He Was in England & Germany:
“I was more over than in England and Germany than I was anywhere else. Like, I was — when you think of Beatlemania, I can tell you it was pretty close to the same thing for me. I got attacked by women, chased, and it was like I was on a different level than any wrestler that I ever saw. I never seen anything like what I went through in Europe. I got mobbed and attacked by women and girls all the time everywhere.”
“I saw Jimmy Hart go — there was girls outside the bus crying, and I remember Jimmy Hart standing there, looking at it. He goes, ‘I can’t believe it!’ Nobody knows how special that is there, all the girls crying out there for you because that’s — you don’t see that. That’s really, you got something special when you got people doing that for you.”
On Being Attacked By Women At a Show In Germany:
“I remember I wrestled — I was Intercontinental Champion with Chief Jay Strongbow somewhere in Germany. And I got there and he goes, ‘You’re on first match.’ And I go, ‘Don’t put me on first.’ He goes, ‘You’re on first. What, are you special now or something?’ I said, ‘I’m Intercontinental Champion. Don’t put me on first.’ He goes, ‘You’re on first,’ like I was in a meaningless match or something. And I kind of just [said] like, ‘All right.’ And he goes — like, he thought I had like a big head or something. And I said, ‘I just don’t think it should be on first.’ Anyway, he didn’t understand how over I was in Germany.
“So I walked out to the ring, like when I got introduced was I walking out. And I got attacked by women, middle-aged women, mostly. I got tackled by, I’m not kidding, maybe 50 or 60 women just walking to the ring, that attacked me before I even got to the ring. And they pinned me down on the ground. They knocked over the barricades. And they were all fondling me. I remember my arms were pinned down, my legs were pinned down, and all these women were grabbing my crotch. And I remember just lying there going, ‘I am absolutely helpless to do anything about it. I can’t move my hands or my arms. I can’t get up.’ They had to pick them all off one after another, pull them all off. And then I had to go to the ring and do the match.”
On The Reaction Backstage:
“I came back through the curtain, and I remember Chief Jay Strongbow came up to me. He goes, ‘I’ll never put you on first ever again.’ And I remember like, ‘I was trying to tell you that I’m — I got something different than everyone else here.'”
