Former WWE Superstar and 17-time World Champion John Cena is doing the media rounds to promote his new feature, Matchbox: The Movie. During a recent visit to Busted Open Radio this week, Cena addressed why he didn’t appear overly emotional and remained quite poised on the night of his last match.
Cena explained that he had already mentally prepared himself for the moment, and he believed it was more about the reaction of the audience versus his own. He stated (via WrestlingInc.com), “What I do and how I perform is not for my personal satisfaction. It is for the reaction of the audience. And if they felt emotional the day that I stopped performing in the ring, that’s the feels that they have. A lot of people who were super emotional on my last day, I didn’t share those emotions.”
Cena continued, “I’m completely sympathetic, but I had already compartmentalized my journey. I know it’s a chapter in my life. I work every day on self-worth, stuff like that. Man, I finished my last match. I have left nothing on the table. There is nothing more I could give.”
John Cena wrestled his last match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025. He lost to Gunther via submission. After the match, the locker room emptied to the ringside area to show Cena their respect. Before leaving the arena, Cena saluted the fans and thanked them.
