John Cena Reveals He Initially Thought Firefly Fun House Match at WrestleMania 36 Would Be His Final In-Ring Outing
Former WWE Champion John Cena called time on his pro wrestling career with a 12-month Retirement Tour last year. The 17-time World Champion battled Gunther in his retirement match, losing to The Ring General via submission.
Interestingly, Cena recently revealed that he initially thought that his match at WrestleMania 36 would be his last in-ring outing.
At Night Two of WrestleMania 36, Cena faced the late great Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Fun House Match. Speaking to Alistair McGeorge of Metro, John Cena said:
“Honestly, no kidding. I thought the Firefly Fun House was going to be the last match of my career. I really did think that the Firefly Fun House match was going to be the tail end, and that was kind of a meta journey for me through facing all of my demons and then letting go.”
As it turned out, Cena would go on to wrestle several matches as a part-time performer in the early 2020s before returning for a full-blown 12-month Farewell Tour in 2025. He headlined WrestleMania 41 Night Two alongside Cody Rhodes and captured his record-breaking 17th WWE World Championship.
