Lest We Forget: WWE Vengeance 2006

Have you ever watched a professional wrestling match that was so bad that you wished you were no longer alive? I’m willing to watch each and every match that has given you that feeling. Let me know what the worst matches you’ve ever seen were in the comments section, and I’ll review them in my series, “I’d Rather Be Dead Than Watch ________”

WWE Vengeance 2006
Live from Charlotte Bobcat’s Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina
June 25, 2006

The opening video highlights John Cena’s recent outbursts toward ECW, which has led to him challenging Sabu to an Extreme Lumberjacks Match. We also see footage of Edge’s attacks of Rob Van Dam. Lastly, we are shown the D-Generation X reunion, filled with mooning midgets, green slime, and angry Vince McMahon. This should certainly be an interesting event.

Randy Orton vs. Kurt Angle

This is a rematch from ECW One Night Stand 2. Orton tries to avoid Kurt Angle in the early goings. Kurt Angle gets a double leg takedown, and then rides the back of Randy Orton before strapping in a hammerlock. Angle rolls the hold into a cover for two. Angle tries to find an Ankle Lock, but Orton scurries to the ropes to break it. Orton goes out to the apron, but Angle stays on the attack. Angle tries to German suplex Orton to the floor, but Orton hangs on. Orton elbows Angle off. Orton tries for a clothesline on the floor, but Angle ducks and hits a German suplex! Angle then suplex Orton back inside the ring. Angle rides Orton again, this time looking for an arm hold before Orton gets the ropes. Both men circle, but Orton gets a thumb to the eye and follows up with a dropkick. Orton throws Angle to the floor. Orton sends Angle hard into the barricade. Orton takes the action back inside and covers for two. Orton fires away with punches from mount and then drops a knee for two. Trying to keep control, Orton wrenches away with a chinlock. Angle powers out of it and slams Orton down with a samoan drop variation. Angle tries to capitalize, but he is met with a back elbow. Orton goes to a chinlock, but Angle fights up. Angle hits the ropes, but Orton catches him with a knee to the gut. Orton follows up with a knee drop for two, and he goes back to the chinlock again. Angle rolls Orton off, but Orton fires back up and levels the former Olympian with a clothesline. Orton heads up top, but Angle runs up the buckles and hits a BELLY-TO-BELLY SUPERPLEX! Angle hits a belly-to-belly overhead twice in a row, and then stalks Orton. Angle goes for the Angle Slam, but Orton slips out and hits an INVERTED BACKBREAKER! One, two, no! RKO attempt, but Angle shoves him into the buckles. Orton loosens the top turnbuckle bad, but Angle grabs him from behind. Angle hits a series of EIGHT ROLLING GERMAN SUPLEXES! Wowza. Orton rolls out to the floor. Angle goes to the floor and rolls Orton back inside. Angle cover- One, two, no! Angle goes for the Ankle Lock, but Orton kicks him off. Orton goes to the corner and knocks the turnbuckle pad off the top buckle. Angle sneaks up behind him- back suplex. Angle applies the ANKLE LOCK! Orton considers nears the bottom rope, but Angle pulls him back to the center of the ring. Orton rolls forward, and Angle hits the exposed turnbuckle! RKO! ONE, TWO, THREE! Orton gains a bit of redemption at 12:39.

Winner: Randy Orton
These guys weren’t going at full-speed, and the crowd here wasn’t as hot as the audience at One Night Stand, but they worked with the circumstances at hand. They did a great job of kicking off the show, warming up the crowd without doing too much. This was a good, if formulaic, opening contest. 1 for 1.

Backstage, Vince McMahon talks on the phone with someone, and says Vengeance will be his. He says the Spirit Squad is ready, but then freezes when someone comes in. It’s a kid in a wheel chair who is wearing a D-X shirt. Vince says D-X has been taking him on a ride, so he’s going to take this kid on a ride. Vince calls this “the ride on the highway to hell.” He then presumably shoves the child down stairs or into a heavy metal object. Jonathan Coachman enters the scene. The Coach found a Penis Pump outside of Vince’s door. Vince said the joke was just on D-X. Coach says he invited a family friend to the show tonight. Coach says that the kid is in a wheel chair, and that he will tell Vince when he gets there. Vince seems nervous, but says that’s fine. GET IT?! IT’S THE KID THAT WAS JUST IN VINCE’S OFFICE!

Umaga w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada vs. Eugene w/ “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Doink the Clown, and Kamala

Hacksaw gets “U-S-A!” chants started at the bell. Eugene tries to pound on Umaga, but he gets leveled with a clothesline. Eugene fires away with punches, but he then eats a right from Umaga. Eugene crawls to the corner, and Umaga levels him with a hip attack! SAMOAN SPIKE by Umaga! That does it at 1:37.

Winner: Umaga
This existed. I’m a huge Umaga fan, but this wasn’t his best squash. The match was kind of there, and the crowd was more into the legends on the floor than the action transpiring in the ring. 1 for 2.

After the match, Umaga takes out Duggan and Doink with the Samoan Spike. Umaga and Kamala square off, but Armando puts a stop to it, and takes Umaga to the back.

Backstage, Todd Grisham is with Mick Foley. Despite being a heel, Foley gets a cheap pop. Foley reads an excerpt from Flair’s book, where Flair calls him a glorified stuntman. Foley claims he will out-wrestle Flair.

Two out of Three Falls: Mick Foley vs. Ric Flair

Mick Foley shows off some chain wrestling skills, but Flair counters with a hammerlock, and Foley gets to the ropes for two. The two exchange wrist locks, and Flair gains the advantage again. Flair struts around, but then eats a punch to the face from Foley. Foley fires away with strikes in the corner, and then does a strut of his own. Foley charges and nails Flair with a running knee to the face. DOUBLE ARM DDT by Foley! Mick points toward his crotch, and it’s time for MR. SOCKO! Socko is decked out in Flair gear. Foley charges for the Mandible Claw, but Flair gets the Testicular Claw! Flair fires off chopes. Flair heads up top, and FLAIR ACTUALLY HITS THE DOUBLE AXE HANDLE OFF THE TOP! However, he hurts his knee in doing so. Foley chop blocks Flair, and then wrenches the knee over the bottom rope. Foley drops an elbow on Flair’s knee. Foley goes for the Figure Four, but Flair gets a small package! ONE, TWO, THREE! Flair wins the first fall at 4:13!

Foley charges to start the second fall, but Flair gets another small package! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Foley then pounds away on Flair and throws him to the floor. Foley lands some punches on the outside, but Flair reverses an Irish whip and sends Foley knees first into the steel steps! Flair takes the action back inside and knocks Foley back out of the ring. Foley goes into the crowd, but Flair chases after him. Foley turns around and fights off Flair. Flair charges, but Foley back body drops him over the barricade and down onto the padding! Foley rolls Flair inside, and brings a garbage can into the ring. Foley goes to use the garbage can, but Flair trips him up. FIGURE FOUR! Foley hits Flair with the can to break the hold! Foley is disqualified, and Flair wins 2-0 at 7:00.

Winner: Ric Flair
These two were both still capable of putting on good matches at this point in their careers. However, this wasn’t one of them. They had a pretty cramped time space, and it didn’t seem like they got to work the crowd the way they would’ve liked to. 1 for 3.

After the match, Foley nails Flair with the can again. Mick then goes out to the floor and brings in a barbed wire bat. FOLEY NAILS FLAIR WITH THE BAT! Foley continues the assault, grating the bat across Flair’s face, and then dropping it with an Elbow. Foley holds the belt up while medical personnel come out to attend to Flair, who is a bloody mess. The crowd chants, “Foley sucks!” A number of people in the crowd seem genuinely concerned by the large amount of blood. While I recommended skipping the match, definitely check out the angle that followed it.

A commercial airs to hype the Wrestlemania 22 DVD.

Backstage, Maria is joined by Carlito. Maria asks if Carlito he spits in the face of people who don’t want to be cool. Carlito confirms that fact. She then says that the people who don’t want to be cool are the coolest, which creates a paradox. Carlito says she doesn’t know what she just said, but that nothing will be cooler than Carlito winning the Intercontinental title. Torrie Wilson comes up and says she is doing a photo shoot and needs Maria to rub oil over her body. She tells Carlito to hold her puppies for three seconds. She then hands him two dogs while Maria oils up Torrie. Carlito says this is cool. However, his music hits. Carlito says he doesn’t want to leave this and go to the ring.

Intercontinental Title Match: Shelton Benjamin (c) vs. Carlito vs. Johnny Nitro w/ Melina

Carlito starts by dumping Nitro to the floor, but Shelton rolls him up for two. Shelton presses the advantage, but Carlito gets a schoolboy of his own for two. Carlito gets a prawn hold for two, and then grabs a side headlock. Nitro comes in, but both men back body drop him. Shelton fights out of the headlock. Nitro sends Carlito into the ring post. Nitro tries to go after Shelton, but Shelton manages to scoop slam him on the floor. Shelton walks toward Melina, and Nitro is able to jump Shelton. CARLITO TAKES OUT BOTH MEN WITH A DOULBE SPRINGBOARD FRONTFLIP SENTON! That was beautiful. Carlito takes Nitro inside and covers for two. Shelton tries to cover but Nitro jumps him and pounds away. Nitro sends Shelton into the buckles. Nitro charges, but Shelton hits an Alley-Oop powerbomb, dropping Nitro onto the top turnbuckle! Shelton covers, but Melina puts Nitro’s foot on the ropes. CARLITO GETS A FLYING VICTORY ROLL ON SHELTON! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Carlito sends Shelton into the corner. Carlito whips Nitro toward Shelton. Nitro sends Shelton into the buckles, but eats a boot as he charges. Carlito comes in and cleans house. Carlito gets an inside cradle on Shelton, but Nitro breaks it up at two. Carlito takes out both men with a springboard double back elbow off of the second rope. Carlito covers both guys separately, getting two both times. Nitro runs at Carlito, but Carlito low-bridges him to the floor. Shelton cracks Carlito with a kick to the back of the neck! ONE, TWO, NO! Carlito cuts off Shelton, and hits a BACKCRACKER! Carlito goes to cover, but Nitro pulls him to the floor! Nitro slides in and covers- ONE, TWO, THREE! Nitro steals the title at 12:05!

Winner: Johnny Nitro
This match was entertaining from bell-to-bell. Carlito really shined here, and the finish was great because it made Nitro look like a complete asshole for stealing his victory. 2 for 4.

Backstage, the Spirit Squad pump themselves up and talk about destroying DX. Vince comes in, and says that DX is a social disease. He tells them that they are the cure for the disease. The squad leaves. Vince then picks up his penis pump, and takes it into the bathroom with him, despite a camera filming him the whole time. An explosion noise takes place in the bathroom. Vince comes with green stuff on his face. “THAT DAMN DX!” I really wasn’t a fan of the DX reunion, and segments like this are why.

A video package hypes the Edge/RVD title match.

WWE Championship Match: Rob Van Dam (c) vs. Edge w/ Lita

Both men lock up, and Edge takes RVD down to the mat with a waistlock. The two engage again, and Edge shoves RVD into the corner, where he punches RVD in the gut to take the advantage. Van Dam up top- FIVE STAR FROGSPLASH! ONE, TWO, THREE! RVD retains at 17:43.

Winner: Rob Van Dam
These two guys looked like the truly cared about winning the WWE Championship. Both men did a lot of spots that they don’t normally do, and it made them seem desperate to get the victory. This was a really great match, but the biggest problem here was that the crowd didn’t treat these guys like main-eventers. 3 for 5.

Backstage, the ECW Extremists chant “RVD! ECW!” Paul Heyman comes into their locker room. Heyman says there will be an equal number of Raw and ECW lumberjacks for the Sabu/Cena match. The Extremists chant “ECW” again as Heyman leaves.

Kane goes for the goozle, but IK ducks and applies one of his own. Kane fights off IK, but IK catches him coming off the ropes with a big boot. IK goes up top, but Kane cuts him off. Kane goes up top, but IK catches him coming off with a goozle. IK with a chokeslm! ONE, TWO, THREE! The crowd goes mild at 7:07.

Winner: Imposter Kane
To be frank, this match was boring. Things plotted along, and the crowd could not have cared less about Imposter Kane. When Imposter Kane won, you could practically hear the air conditioning filter through the arena it was so quite. This experiment was a failure. 3 for 6.

We get a commercial for The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection, which is must-own.

Winner: John Cena
This match was short, but it was intense, and I couldn’t take my eyes off the action. Both guys looked tough and crazy here. I could’ve done without Sabu tapping, but that didn’t put too big of a damper on an otherwise great match. 4 for 7.

Nicky tags in Johnny, who HBK cuts off. However, the Spirit Squad pull HBK to the floor, and KENNY NAILS HBK WITH A STEEL CHAIR! The referee didn’t see it! Triple H is pissed, and the Spirit Squad role HBK back inside. Nicky goes to the floor, and LEAPS IN OFF OF A TRAMPOLINE TO HIT A BULLDOG ON HBK! Johnny covers- ONE, TWO, NO! Kenny hits a leaping back elbow on HBK for two. Nicky tags in, and Kenny throws him into a flying clothesline on HBK. Mikey tags in while HBK gets beat up in the corner. Mikey yells at HBK to get up while the crowd rallies behind him. Mitch and Kenny plant Michaels with a double team flapjack, and Kenny covers for two. HBK and Kenny collide with each man hitting a clothesline. Shawn gets up his feet, but Mikey cheap shots him. Triple H and Michaels single out Kenny inside the ring. Triple H plants Kenny with a PEDIGREE, and Michaels lands SWEET CHIN MUSIC on another Spirit Squad member! Double pin- ONE, TWO, THREE! D-X does it at 17:50.

Winners: D-Generation X
This isn’t exactly ideal for a pay-per-view main-event. While there were some intense moments, it was more of a comedy match more than anything else. Even after HBK was laid out with a chair, it still felt like there was no way the Spirit Squad would win. That said, this was an enjoyable match. It would’ve been more enjoyable as a Raw main-event rather than a pay-per-view main-event, but it’s still worth watching. 5 for 8.

After the match, Triple H and Michaels celebrate. Another Spirit Squad member runs it, but Michaels drops him with Sweet Chin Music. Nicky eats Sweet Chin Music, and Johnny takes a Pedigree. Triple H whispers something to Michaels. D-X single out Mitch and toss everyone else out of the ring. Triple H drops his trunks, and HBK shoves Mitch’s face into his ass. Yup. Vince McMahon comes out to the top of the ramp and looks on. Vince tells D-X congratulations, and that he will see them tomorrow night.

The 411: The 411: This is a tough show to rate. After the WWE title match, which was undoubtedly the highlight of this event, things seemed to trail off a bit. Ending the pay-per-view with what was essentially a comedy squash match left a lot to be desired. Nothing here is going to completely blow your mind, but most of it is worth watching. I'll give this a mild recommendation.

Final Score:  6.0   [ Average ]  legend
