Ric Flair appeared on the Ariel Helwani Show this week and discussed a variety of topics, including why he and Hulk Hogan didn’t wrestle at WrestleMania 8. Highlights of his comments are below.
On why they didn’t wrestle at WrestleMania 8: “I don’t know the answer to that. I’ll tell you what I think. I don’t think Hulk wanted to leave on a losing note, which I totally understand because who am I, after what he’s done for the company, and number two, I don’t know, maybe they thought it wouldn’t draw like it should, I have no idea. The one thing that I know for sure, is that I never ever got over in New York.”
On if Flair vs. Hogan was the original plan for WrestleMania 8: “You know what Vince did? He said, ‘I’m not going to give you a guarantee, I’ll shake your hand to make you more money.’ I never asked him for anything. I was just so anxious to get away. I didn’t know I was going to win the Royal Rumble. I walked in that day and Vince said you’re winning the Royal Rumble, I said, ‘what?’ I didn’t expect that. I just wanted freedom from being belittled by Jim Herd. I built WCW and I’m not ashamed to say that.”
