Stephanie McMahon Shares the Story of How Triple H Proposed

On the latest episode of What’s Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon, Stephanie answered a fan question about how Triple H proposed to her. The story goes back to the vacation the two took shortly before Triple H returned from his first quad tear. You can check out her comments below:

On the Vacation Where It Started:

“Well, he was going to be okay if I put it in the book, so I guess he’d be okay if I told it. This goes back to when he was recovering from his first quad tear. We were fully an item by then, and it was right before he came back, maybe a few weeks before the Garden. He took his first vacation in however long, and we went to this island in Florida, and it rained the entire time. Of course it did. One time the sun actually came out, and we were so excited. We got out by the pool, put the suntan lotion on, closed our eyes, and the dark clouds were right on us. But we had splurged, and there was a chef, and he kept playing Sade, ‘By Your Side.’ And Paul, who never dances, ever, asked me to dance. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ I loved this guy. I always loved him, even though I didn’t know it. And there we were dancing, and I thought to myself, ‘If we ever get married, this will be our wedding song.’ So I told him that, and I told him that when he was gone, I would often play that song and imagine him there and dance around the room.”

Stephanie McMahon the night Triple H:

“It was February 13th, Friday the 13th, because he had to go on the road before Valentine’s Day. I guess he wanted to do it on Valentine’s Day. At Christmas, he had asked my dad for my hand at my brother’s place. Everybody knew but me, obviously. I remember I had a terrible migraine that day, but I knew I was going to dinner, and at the last minute, he told me to pack an overnight bag. I didn’t know where we were going or what we were doing. I kept asking, ‘What should I bring? Do I need to dress up? Where are we going to dinner?’ And he just didn’t say much. So I went to meet up with him, and we went to this really nice hotel in New York. On the bed were rose petals in a heart, but I just thought he was being romantic. He asked me to order room service while he was doing whatever, so I ordered room service and looked around this amazing room we were in. Then he brought out a boombox, a little mini-fridge-size speaker you’d put on your shoulder, and he played Sade and asked me to dance. While ‘By Your Side’ was playing, he was shaking, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, he hates to dance so much that he’s shaking, but he’s doing it for me. How sweet is this?’ The song ended, he got down on his knee, and he asked me to marry him.”

On her answer: “I was silent. I was in shock. When I’m really surprised, I go quiet, but I was freaking out on the inside. He asked me, and it was so beautiful, and I just didn’t say anything. And he said, ‘Is that a yes?’ And I said, ‘Yes, yes, yes.'”
