Sebastian Stan Discusses Bucky Getting Back to Himself in Avengers: Infinity War at Wizard World Portland

Sebastian Stan did a Q&A at Wizard World Portland and tease for Bucky’s persona in Avengers: Infinity War, an idea for possibly playing Luke Skywalker and more. Stan did a Q&A at the convention over the weekend and, while he made it clear he couldn’t talk much about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, did offer some insight into playing Bucky in previous films and a hint of what to expect of him .

A fan asked Stan about the three versions of Bucky we’ve seen so far: the 1940’s version from Captain America: The First Avenger, the Winter Soldier and “broken white boy” Bucky, as Shuri would call him. Asked which was his favorite to play, the actor said (to the laughs of the audience), “You know, when you’re a broken white boy, you play a good broken white boy.” Further elaborating, he said, “Look, um, they’re all interesting…like now, I guess Bucky #4. He’s kind of like…it’s a little bit back to number one-ish (First Avengers version), slightly.”

Stan also talked about Bucky’s time in Wakanda, which leads to the post-credits scene from Black Panther in which Bucky talks with Shuri. Asked how Bucky got deprogrammed by Shuri, he compared the situation to a Tom Cruise film. “Did you guys ever see The Last Samurai?,” he asked the audience. “That to me is like, if you see what kind of happens with Tom Cruise’s character in that movie, sort of how he gets — he faces all these nightmares and he goes through this whole sort of transformation. And he’s just, finally…they test him and they put him through all of these situations to gain his trust, and for him to gain their trust. And then eventually he learns about the culture and he becomes one of them in a way. I feel like that’s how I think of that time in Wakanda.”

When asked by a fan who said he looked just like Mark Hamill what Luke Skywalker story he’d want to be in, Stan pointed to the largely-empty space from before The Force Awakens. “Listen,” he said. “The only storyline I could ever real realistically entertain would be what happened after Return of the Jedi. And if they ever wanted to do anything then…I gotta do some research. What happened after Return of the Jedi? We should talk.”

And in a sillier (but no less crowd-pleasing moment), he had a quick and simple response when asked what his stripper name would be: “Broken White Boy!”
