One of HBO’s Game of Thrones Spin-Offs Isn’t Moving Forward
HBO has had plans for several Game of Thrones spin-offs for a while now, but one of them is officially winnowed out. Speaking with THR, Bryan Cogman has confirmed that his planned prequel will not be happening and he’s moving on from the franchise. Cogman is a regular writer for the main series, having written “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken,” “Stormborn,” and more.
“I’m definitely leaving,” Cogman said. “I was developing one of the successor shows with George. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane, whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way. I’m working with Amazon now and helping them out with their shows. So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros. It’s wonderfully bittersweet. I’ll certainly miss it, but I’m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain’s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I’ve learned.”
The one series that is confirmed as moving forward is from Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin, which has cast several series regulars for its pilot episode. It is set thousands of years before the events of the main series. The network is said to have several spinoffs in development, which would appear to be down to four (including the Goldman-showrun series).
