Taika Waititi is tossing some cold water on reports that he’s set to direct a Star Wars film. It was reported in January that the Thor: Ragnarock and Jojo Rabbit director was being sought for a film within the Lucasfilm franchise. The news certainly seemed to make sense; Waititi directed the final episode of The Mandalorian and has made Disney quite a bit of money via Thor. However, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi suggested that the news was not accurate.
“Listen, what does ‘approached’ even mean?,” Waititi said in response to the rumors after giving a bit of a frown and shake of his head. “I’ve seen Star Wars, that’s about as far as it got.”
Of course, that’s not a definitive statement that he hasn’t been approached, and he could just be playing coy about it (as the title of the EW video suggests). As of now, Star Wars is currently focused primarily on its small-screen endeavors with Disney+ between the Cassian Andor prequel series, the second season of The Mandalorian and the upcoming final episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
