Damien Leone has left a mark on the slasher genre with Terrifier and Terrifier 2, and he’d says like a shot at bringing Friday the 13th to screens. Leone recently spoke with /Film for a new interview and during the conversation he mentioned that he would love to do a remake of the series that turned Jason Voorhees into a household name.

“I’ve been on record for quite some time now saying if I could ever remake one slasher film, it would be Friday the 13th,” Leone said. “Jason was always my favorite slasher since I was a little kid, and I think that there’s a way to … I mean, my approach would be to keep it in the ’80s, honestly. I would have it take place in the early ’80s. I would try and make him as scary as possible because I feel like that’s something they kind of lost as the movies went along. You just start getting too comfortable with these villains and you need to be scared of them again.”

He added that he’s had some conversations about such a film, but isn’t in a position to make it, noting, “Believe it or not, I’ve gotten to talk to some people who are execs who are in charge of that franchise. I think I’m still a little too obscure on that Hollywood list of people that they would approach to direct that film.”

The Friday the 13th franchise is just coming out of a legal battle and has A24 and Bryan Fuller set to produce a TV series with Peacock. Titled Crystal Lake, the series is an “expanded prequel” that will include both Jason and Pamela Voorhees; it is set to arrive next year. There are currently no announced plans for future films in the slasher series.

Leone does have another slasher coming, with Terrifier 3 set to arrive soon.
