Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Duncan, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. I’m not going to sugarcoat this one people, this card is terrible on paper. To put some of this cards badness into context there’s only 3 ranked fighters, 9 fighters on this card have yet to win the UFC, 15 are coming off of a loss, 7 have lost more than 2 or more in a row, and only a single fight features two fighters coming off of wins facing off. This is the worst UFC card of the year so far on paper, by a non trivial margin. As for things to look forward to the main event is a perfectly fine fight as veteran Renato Moicano takes on rising fighter Chris Duncan. Virna Jandiroba vs. Tabatha Ricci is relevant for the division at least. Abdul Rakhman Yakhyaev is a prospect so that’s good, and Jose Delano vs. Robert Ruchala might be a bit of a sleeper bout. Beyond that there’s just not much going on here. But, as usual, there’s always the chance of great action despite things being pretty dire on paper.
UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Duncan comes to the world from the Meta Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got Dan Hellie leading commentary along with Michael Bisping and Paul Felder while Joe Martinez handles announcing and McKenzie Pavacich does the roving reporter bit. We’ll be in the smaller 25 foot cage, and Nevada has very liberal use of instant replay in addition to all the newer rules being in place.
Kai Kamaka III went 1-2-1 during his previous time in the UFC which ended in 2021 but now he’s back in the promotion and looking for his first win with them since he beat Tony Kelley in 2020. Dakota Hopo brings a five fight winning streak into his UFC debut and now he’s looking for to extend that streak. The odds are with Kamaka at -165 to Hope’s +135.

He sends love to his wife then knew the fight would be tough especially on short notice and again puts over Hope.
Dione Barbosa has traded wins and losses while going 2-2 in the UFC, she’s coming off of a loss though and is looking for that pattern to hold long enough to avoid her first UFC losing streak. Melissa Gatto has gone 3-2 in the UFC but has been out of action for a little over 2 years at this point, she did win her last fight though and now looks for her first winning streak since 2021. This one closed even, a -110 pick ’em.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Barbosa but could go either way
ROUND TWO: They trade then Gatto reaches for a single leg but Barbosa counters with a high crotch lift and gets on top in full guard. Gatto looks to work her guard up high then Barbosa stands out of the guard and lands a very illegal soccer kick which knocks out Gatto. I know the new rules are that your hands don’t count but Gatto still had a knee and hip down so we’re just seeing if this is DQ or No Contest. OK wait, there’s a time out clock running, I mean they can’t let Gatto continue after that. Part of what they’re talking about is if the kick what, went to the neck or head? Neck and head should both be illegal targets under the circumstances we found ourselves in. OK the ref takes a point from Barbosa and then what, we’re fighting again? OK I don’t agree with this but we’re back to fighting. Barbosa with a few punches then a knee but Gatto gets a takedown against the fence. ROUND THREE: Calf kick from Barbosa to start. Gatto lands a couple of rights. Jabs from Gatto. They tie up and Barbosa smothers a throw then gets on top in half guard. Gatto is half fishing for a kimura, that’s not a very good idea as she’s just bleeding time and Barbosa is pretty easily stopping the hands from connecting. Some elbows to the body from Barbosa. Gatto does finally get her wrists together but Barbosa counters into an armbar attempt, she’s got spiderweb control and cranks the arm but the angle is still saving Gatto just a bit. Barbosa is trying to adjust the attack, Gatto is able to stack her up and get her to bail on the attack so Gatto winds up on top in full guard. Sweep from Barbosa and she gets on top, Gatto tries a leg attack then works to sweep and grabs at another kimura then sweeps to top position with the attack. Only a minute left for Gatto’s Hail Mary finish to materialize. Gatto switches to an armbar attack but Barbosa is blocking it from really developing. There’s actually a bit of a dog bar for Barbosa if she wants it but she just hangs on to see the end of the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Barbosa, 29-27 Barbosa overall
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Dione Barbosa via majority decision (28-28, 29-27 x2)

Hailey Cowan has gone 0-2 in the UFC and has been out of action for nearly a full year, she really needs to find her first UFC win here as even the relentless UFC schedule might not make room for an 0-3 start this far down the card in a division that doesn’t need extra dross. Well on that note UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Duncan comes to a close. For a dismal night on paper it turned out OK in practice. The lack of real stakes hurt it but the action was pretty solid. We’ll be breaking down all the fallout from this event on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA Podcast over on the 411mania youtube channel. Also we’ll look ahead to next week, which just lost the co-main event of Joshua Van vs. Tatsuro Taira due to a Van injury but that card is still pretty good overall. I’ll be back next week for that card and I hope you will too. Until then thank you for reading, be that live or after the fact, stay safe out there, and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
