Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night: Muhammad vs. Bonfim, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. There’s not a lot of oxygen or interest in this card with the White House card looming next week, but for warehouse fights we’ve got some surprisingly strong bouts mixed in here. The main event is relevant at welterweight but also fits into the trend the UFC’s been doing recently of trying to oust the old guard. Former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad tries to end a two fight losing streak against rising contender Gabriel Bonfim. The co-main is just weird, Brendan Allen stepped in on short notice and beat top ranked Reiner de Ridder and now fights unranked Edmen Shahbazyan. Just odd match making there. The best fight on the card to my eye is Fares Ziam taking on Tom Nolan, though on the prelims Marcus McGhee is back and he’s fun plus Bruno Silva vs. Edgar Chairez. Iwo Baraniewski vs. Junior Tafa at least wont go long. There’s some dross though, Priscilla Cachoeira vs. Chelsea Chandler for example, but in general we’ve got an OK set of Apex fights here. Now let’s hope the action lives up to the potential.
UFC Fight Night: Muhammad vs. Bonfim comes to the world from the Meta Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got Brendan Fitzgerald heading up commentary along with Dominick Cruz and Paul Felder, which is a solid trio. Morgan Werth will be doing the roving reporter bit after working Road to UFC and UFC BJJ events, similarly our announcer is Justin Bernard who’s worked Road to UFC and the Contender Series. We are in the smaller 25 foot cage but the rules Nevada uses are pretty well established at this point.
Ketlen Souza has gone 3-3 in the UFC she is coming off of a win though, and her most recent losses were close split decisions. Now she’s trying to build another winning streak and start moving up the ranks. Ariane Carnelossi has also gone 3-3 in the UFC, she’s coming off of a loss though and is trying to avoid her first losing streak. The odds are with Souza at -310 to +250 on Carnelossi.
Strawweight Bout: Ariane Carnelossi (15-4, 116 lbs.) vs. Ketlen Souza (16-6, 116 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Souza is an inch taller with an inch and a half of reach advantage. Carnelossi comes out moving forward early. Souza blocks a few punches. One two from Souza. Carnelossi keeps pressing forward but is struggling to land. Double jab and a right hand from Souza drop Carnelossi, she tries to stand and Souza floors her with a head kick to get the ref to step in.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Ketlen Souza via KO, punches and head kick, at 1:34 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mrs. Souza for her work. Mic time for Souza and the translator, she has been waiting for this fight for a while and was very well prepared for her opponent and wants a bonus. Asking for it almost guarantees you wont get it. She talks us through the finish and puts over her team.
Finish is found HERE.
Jeisla Chaves is undefeated and coming into her UFC debut off of a split decision win on the Contender Series, now she’s looking to make the most of her chance at making a first impression. Chaves gets the back and grabs a choke, she’s got the body triangle locked in and Duben has to resort to hand fighting. That wasn’t a good choke attack, she doesn’t seem super confident with her choking mechanics. A few punches from Chaves then elbows to the shoulder. She’s just trying to open up choke attacks but isn’t finding one yet. That’s where the round will end.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Chaves, 20-18 Chaves overall

Chaves gets the back again but this time loses it and Duben gets on top in full guard. Quick wall walk from Chaves, she’s peppering in elbows but Duben takes her down into side control. Chaves gets half guard back. A few short strikes from Duben land but she’s got less than a minute to find a finish. They both swing strikes on the mat, Chaves regains her feet and both women trade knees as the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Duben, 29-28 Chaves overall
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jeisla Chaves via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)
Not sure about Duben getting the first, but I’m not going to be up in arms over it at the moment. No interview for Chaves.
Jordan Leavitt has gone 6-3 in the UFC but is coming off of a successful return to featherweight when he bested Yadier del Valle. Leavitt is looking to keep up his two fight winning streak and firmly establish himself in the featherweight division. Joanderson Brito broke a two fight losing streak his last time out and now looks for his first winning streak in over two years. Brito is the -180 favorite while +150 for Leavitt might be a decent value bet.

Leavitt shoots, and Brito grabs a ninja choke on the way down which gets tight enough to force the tap.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Joanderson Brito via Submission, ninja choke, at 4:19 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Brito for his work. Mic time for Brito and the translator, he is very happy to be here in the UFC living his dream and is very happy with his new UFC contract. He thinks he’s still among the best in the game and then mentions he’s never been finished in the UFC and hopes he’ll get a bonus so he can afford a house and get married. Once again, asking for those bonuses almost never works.
SINKIN' IN THE NINJA CHOKE 🥷
Joanderson Brito comes in & takes over to get the first round submission!

Chelsea Chandler has gone just 2-3 in the UFC, missed weight twice during that time, is on a two fight losing streak, has been out of action for over a year, and hasn’t won in over two years. With the UFC seeming like they’re renovating the division Chandler badly needs to justify her spot on the roster here. Priscila Cachoeira has gone just 1-4 in her last five fights, tried to eye gouge her way out of a couple of chokes, and hasn’t won a fight in over a year. Frankly neither of these women should be in the UFC. Close fight here, -125 on Chandler to +105 for Cachoeira.
Women’s Bantamweight Bout: Priscila Cachoeira (13-8, 135.5 lbs.) vs. Chelsea Chandler (6-4, 135 lbs.)

Cachoeira tries to move, Chandler is fishing for the back and eventually gets both hooks in. Chandler is sort of setting up an arm attack, she goes for it and does get the tap.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Chelsea Chandler via Submission, armbar, at 3:42 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mrs. Chandler for her work. Mic time for Chandler, that’s a dicey proposition, she’s very happy to get the win. She talks us through the finish then says she’ll be back and feels she’s going to maximize her second chance.

Bruno Silva has gone 5-5 with 1 No Contest in the UFC, he’s coming off of a split decision loss to Charles Johnson and if he wants to make a real move in the weight class he needs to avoid another losing streak. Edgar Chairez has only lost to Tatsuro Taira and Joshua Van in the UFC, he’s currently on a two fight winning streak and if he can extend that to three here he could take Silva’s spot in the rankings. Another close one, but the odds tilt towards Silva at -120 to an even +100 on Chairez.

Right uppercut and left hook from Chairez drops Silva, he gets on top in full mount then gets the back and locks up a choke after a few elbows to get the tap.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Edgar Chairez via Submission, rear naked choke, at 4:13 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Chairez for his work. Mic time for Chairez and the translator, he feels he’s a ranked fighter now and his tough up bringing led to this and he’s ready to keep moving up the ranks. He talks us through the finish and notes he does a lot of Mexican boxing in his style and hopes he did enough for a bonus. Again, that almost never works. Asked about the future he would like anyone ranked higher than he is but all he wants to do is fight.
KNOCKED HIM DOWN INTO THE SUBMISSION! 🤯

Fun fight, and McGhee gets an interview to thanks God then put over his family in attendance. He thanks his coaches for helping keep him focused after the second round then notes he should have wrestled but was having too much fun striking with Yannis. He feels good despite a bit of a layoff coming into this fight, he puts over the UFC staff then when asked about the future he wants another ranked opponent while also putting over Yannis again. To close he calls himself the best skateboarder in the UFC.
Matt Schnell has just one win since 2023, a win over Jimmy Flick over a year ago, and he really needs to avoid another losing streak here if he wants to keep any kind of job security. Alessandro Costa is replacing Imanol Rodriguez, hence the catchweight, and he’s traded wins and losses going 3-3 in the UFC but could finally get a UFC winning streak up and running here. Costa is the biggest favorite on the card at -450 to Schnell’s +350.

Iwo Baraniewski is undefeated including being 2-0 in the UFC, he’s generally known for a wild pace and first round finishes and if he can do that again here he’ll likely be set for a step up in class next time out. Mic time for Baraniewski and he jokes that there has to be something beyond the first round in MMA then talks through the plan of attacking the legs of Tafa. Asked about the future he would like a ranked opponent next. Not wholly unfair, the division isn’t good so lower ranked guys shouldn’t be a big reach for a request.
HE'S A PROBLEM AT 205lbs!! 🇵🇱
Iwo Baraniewski goes for the leg kicks straight into GNP for the R1 TKO!

Santiago Luna is undefeated but is stepping in on short notice replacing Victor Henry, he’s got a chance for the biggest win of his career though if he can take out Mitchell. He talks us through the finish and notes Luna just got a little more fatigued than he did and in a few spots he nearly lost the positions. He puts over Luna for taking the fight on short notice, and notes Luna is only 21 years old and has a very bright future.

Fares Ziam has gone 8-2 in the UFC and is on a six fight winning streak that has seen him crack the top rankings, now he’s trying to defend his spot and then set his sights on fighting up the ranks instead of down. Tom Nolan has gone 4-1 in the UFC and is on a four fight winning streak, if he can best Ziam here he could be the one moving up the ranks and starting to make a real push through the division. The odds like Ziam at -310 to +245 for Nolan.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Ziam, 29-28 Ziam overall but this hinges on the second round and that probably did go to Nolan
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Tom Nolan via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
Yeah that’s about right. Mic time Nolan and he thanks God first then says he really just wanted to fight Ziam everywhere and never give him a safe place. He talks through some moments and mentions he could have done better but is happy to finally be a ranked fighter. Asked about the future he feels Ziam was a tough fight and just wants another ranked guy like Moicano specifically. Not a bad call out from Nolan.
Brendan Allen is on a two fight winning streak but most recently he beat Reiner de Ridder and moved all the way into the top 5 contender rankings. Despite that Allen is somehow now fighting an unranked opponent and trying to defend his spot, and while a win likely wont put him ahead of the fighters ranked above him a loss would be devastating. Edmen Shahbazyan has been up and down during his time in the UFC, he’s on a three fight winning streak right now though and is getting another shot at moving up the ranks if he can get a win. Allen closed at -180 to +150 on Shahbazyan.
Middleweight Bout: #4 Brendan Allen (26-7, 185.5 lbs.) vs. Edmen Shahbazyan (16-5, 186 lbs.)

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Brendan Allen via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)
Not sure about Allen getting the first round at all, but him winning two and three is fine. Mic time for Allen, he knew the fight would be tough then asks to fight Sean Strickland next. He talks about just being a dog in here and trying to put on shows for the fans. Again asked about the future he wants the belt, or Imavov, likely October depending on how his knee is feeling.
Belal Muhammad is a former welterweight champion but never defended the belt as he went 0-2 last year dropping fights to Jack Della Maddalena and Ian Machado Garry. If Muhammad wants to get the belt back he really needs to halt this skid and demonstrate he’s still a championship level fighter. Gabriel Bonfim has gone 6-1 in the UFC and is on a four fight winning streak, though that decision over Stephen Thompson was rather dubious, but now gets a shot at a former champion and a win would propel him up the ranks. Our main event closed at a -110 pick ’em.

Mic time for Bonfim and the translator, he keeps Muhammad by him, and puts over Muhammad for taking the hard way to becoming champion and thanks him for that. That sends Muhammad out of the cage but it was nice to let him get some flowers there. He thanks God then talks about working hard to neutralize Muhammad and then wants to fight Jack Della Maddalena next. Not an unreasonable call out.
Well on that note UFC Fight Night: Muhammad vs. Bonfim comes to a close. We’ll be unpacking all the fall out from this event on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA Podcast over on the 411mania youtube page tomorrow, plus looking ahead to UFC Freedom 250 next week. Remember that’s on a Sunday next week, not the usual Saturday, and it’s only a 7 fight card. But it’s got some solid fights on it, and the spectacle of doing it in front of the White House should be cool. Anyway I’ll be back for that event next week and I hope you will as well. Until then thank you for reading, be that live or after the fact, stay safe out there and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
