Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 251. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host from first prelim until the broadcast signs off, relaying all of the action to you just as I see it. The UFC was off last week due to the holiday here in the States, but they’re back in a big way with UFC 251. As the first of several events coming to the world from Yas Island (I will not refer to it otherwise, marketing bait and switch is all that fight island crap was) the UFC is putting forward a triple header of title fights.

The main event was supposed to be a welterweight title fight between champion Kamaru Usman and top contender Gilbert Burns, but last week Burns tested positive for covid-19 and in steps fellow top contender Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal had an exceptional 2019 and if he can win the title here it will be the most transformative 18 months I can recall a fighter going through. Of course standing in his way is a champion who’s never lost in the UFC and is looking to carve his name into the pantheon of all time greats in the form of Kamaru Usman. The next title fight is a rematch for the featherweight crown as newly crowned champion Alexander Volkanovski tries to get his first title defense against the man he beat for the belt, Max Holloway. Those two had a great technical fight last year which brought a halt to an absurd featherweight winning streak that Holloway had going. Next up is a fight for the vacant bantamweight title, surging top fighter Petr Yan battles former featherweight champion and all time great Jose Aldo. I’m not going to lie, this is the least deserving title fight of the three but these two should provide an exciting fight if nothing else and I’ll live with this matchmaking assuming bantamweight gets back to normal going forward because it’s a great division.

As for the rest of the card, it’s not bad at all. A rematch between former strawweight champions Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas should crown the next challenger to Weili Zhang’s crown. You’ve also got the UFC debut of Jiri Prochazka against Volkan Oezdemir, a near guaranteed violence fest between Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Muslim Salikhov. Beyond that it’s a little thin when it comes to name value, but there’s not really anything on this card I’m dreading. Well, except for that heavyweight fight but I’ll take 1 out of 13. It should be noted, a 13 fight card with 3 title fights is definitely tempting fate a little bit when it comes to event run time.

UFC 251 comes to the world from Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. We’re back in the 30 foot cage for the first time in several weeks. A couple of minor notes on the logistics here, the prelims will start at about 2am on location so we’ll see how fighters will adapt to that. Also there’s the temperature and humidity, they’re in the middle east in July and it routinely breaks 90 degrees before 10am to say nothing of what the humidity might be. It could be a really hot fight for the top two fights. On commentary we have Jon Anik and Michael Bisping while Megan Olivi does the on site reporting. As for the rules the UFC is using a hybrid set, most of the changes have been adopted but all you need is one hand on the mat to be considered downed and instant replay can only be used for fight ending sequences.

Related to the above, apparently it’s already going to be a hot one in Abu Dhabi.

Davey Grant has gone 2-3 in the UFC but is coming off of a win and looking for his first UFC winning streak. Martin Day (8-3) lost his UFC debut in 2018 and has had three different fights fall out since then, he’s back now though and trying to get his first UFC win. Day is the favorite at -165 to a +145 comeback for Grant.

Bantamweight Bout: Martin Day (8-3, 136 lbs.) vs. Davey Grant (11-4, 136 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Day is two inches taller and has four and a half inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get us going. Grant opens with a leg kick. Some stance switching from Grant, he lands a calf kick. Another calf kick from Grant. Both men miss left hooks, still trying to get a feel for each other mostly. Grant lands a right to the body. Day blocks a couple of punches, then misses a spinning back kick. Grant is the one generally pressing things right now, but he walks into a right hand is down. Day follows him down and is in the full guard of Grant. Grant back up and they separate. Day blocks a head kick. Neither man has a real feel for the fight yet, and Grant has had enough of this and gets an elevated double leg into the guard of Day. Some rights from Grant as he’s trying to pass the guard. Day up on a single leg attempt, wont get it and the round closes.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Day

ROUND TWO: Day looking to jab more this round. Grant lands a left hook. Bit of a left from Grant gets the attention of Day. Day lands a body kick. Jabs to the body from Day now, Grant is swinging a little wide and with his arms when he punches. One two from Grant. Grant with a jumping knee, partially lands. Day kicking the body now, and he avoids a takedown attempt. They trade body shots. Right from Grant wobbles Day and he’s following him to the fence. Chopping elbow from Grant and a right, then a left to the head. Day lands his own body shot. Grant gets a double leg into side control. Day is trying to wall walk but Grant folds him back down. Day to his knees, Grant uses the threat of a guillotine to force him back down. North-south now for Grant, he attacks an armbar, nearly gets it but Day is able to walk around and release the pressure then get on top in the guard of Grant. Grant looks to wall walk, he’s back up and they separate. Both men land punches, then Day lands a spinning back kick to the chest to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Grant, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: One two from Day to get us going. Day lands another right. Both men land rights, and then they exchange lefts. Grant is after a single leg, but Day limp legs free. Grant to the body, Day lands a left hook to the head. Day lands a right, then a left hook. There’s a real hand speed advantage for Day as well as a technical one that’s starting to make a difference. Grant lands a right to the body. They trade lefts again, these two definitely came to fight. Right from Grant lands then he hits the body as well. They get close, and both men throw left hooks but it’s Day that goes down unconscious.

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Grant for his work this evening. Mic time for Grant, who says he can feel his jaw is broken (the left side of his jaw has a visible swelling). He says he wanted the first fight at this venue to be a good one, then talks us through the finish. He says his kids will be happy for him, gives his love to them to close.

Nice distance management from Grant here, he avoids the left from Day and lands his own to send Day down and out.

Karol Rosa is on a three fight winning streak that includes a successful UFC debut last year, she’s trying to keep that momentum going while making her way through a surprisingly shallow division. Vanessa Melo has gone 0-2 in the UFC and to make matters worse missed weight rather badly for this fight, if she loses in addition to that she’s probably going to be released from the roster. The odds are with Rosa at -240 to a +210 comeback on Melo.

Women’s Bantamweight Bout: Vanessa Melo (10-7, 141 lbs.) vs. Karol Rosa (12-3, 136 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height, Rosa has two and a half inches of reach advantage though. Also of course Melo missed weight. They touch gloves to get us going and both women start throwing early. One two from Rosa, then a body shot as well. More leg kicks from Rosa. Melo is being more stationary. Rosa lands a right but slips and can’t follow up. The jab of Rosa is starting to make a difference, Melo is struggling with the distance. Combination from Rosa lands. Inside leg kick from Rosa lands. Melo misses a left hook, Rosa is still picking her apart at distance. Rosa is still picking with the inside leg kick and long punches, Melo isn’t really working to close distance. Double leg from Rosa into the guard of Melo. Some short elbows from Rosa, Melo is scooting towards the fence. That spot is where the round will end.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rosa, might be a 10-8 argument in there

ROUND TWO: Rosa comes out kicking and circling. Jabs from Rosa as she moves around. They trade leg kicks then Rosa lands a right. They trade rights, then Rosa lands an inside leg kick. Knee and a one two from Rosa. The left hand of Rosa is giving Melo problems. Melo tries a takedown, they wind up clinched on the fence. A few knees from Rosa as they jockey for position. It takes a bit but Rosa gets a takedown into half guard. Elbow from Rosa lands. Lefts and left elbows from Rosa as she’s got Melo squished up against the fence. Rosa traps the right arm of Melo for a bit and lands lefts to the head. Melo is trying to build up her base but Rosa keeps landing lefts to the forehead and temple area. A final flurry from Rosa closes out the round.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Rosa, 20-17 Rosa overall

ROUND THREE: Rosa back to jabbing and kicking. Melo is still struggling with distance and keeping her feet moving to get into proper range. Every time Melo tries to close distance she’s getting jabbed in the face. Switch knee from Rosa as well now. Another knee to the body from Rosa, and a stepping elbow as well. Rosa still jabbing well and moving. Right from Rosa lands. Melo is still trying, she’s not looking for a way out. Double leg from Rosa, Melo sprawls then lands a knee and a left. Rosa lands a left of her own. Both women land rights. Melo lands a right. Rosa has slowed dramatically over the last minute or so. Melo gets a clinch, and Rosa puts her on the fence. Knees to the body from Rosa. Both women land knees while they fight for position, and the round ends in the clinch.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rosa but a closer one, 30-26 Rosa overall

Raulian Paiva just got his first UFC win in February, but missed weight for this fight and likely needs a win to help smooth over that misstep. Zhalgas Zhumagulov brings a four fight winning streak into his UFC debut, that streak includes a couple of familiar names in the form of Ali Bagutinov and Tyson Nam. Zhumagulov is trying to make a good first impression, as you only get one chance to make one. Your favorite is Paiva at -175 while Zhumagulov would pay out at +155.

Flyweight Bout: #14 Raulian Paiva (19-3, 129 lbs.) vs. Zhalgas Zhumagulov (13-3, 126 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Paiva is four inches taller and has three inches of reach advantage in addition to missing weight. They touch gloves, Zhumagulov fighting southpaw. Paiva lands a body kick. More kicks from Paiva, they’re not really landing but he’s working to keep things long. They trade rights. Zhumagulovlands a left, but eats a counter. Right uppercut then a left hook from Paiva. Paiva lands a body kick. Body shot from Zhumagulov in close. Leg kick from Paiva. There’s a brief clinch but nothing comes of it before they break apart. Body kick from Paiva. Bit of a right from Zhumagulov. Knee tap from Zhumagulov but he doesn’t actually follow Paiva down so nothing comes of it. They trade body kicks at range. Zhumagulov lands a right then a left to the body. Another knee tap and this time Zhumagulov gets the back standing and they fight there for the final few seconds.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Paiva

ROUND TWO: Zhumagulov comes out and lands a right. Paiva misses a few punches. Zhumagulov lands a body kick. Zhumagulov catches a kick, but doesn’t get a takedown off of it. Paiva lands a body kick. Zhumagulov lands a left to the body. Another body shot from Zhumagulov lands. Paiva isn’t kicking as much this round. Both men land leg kicks. Paiva misses a series of rights and they clinch up, but Zhumagulov gets free quickly. Body kick from Zhumagulov lands. Paiva lands a front kick to the body. Another exchange of body kicks. They trade power hand punches and clinch again but break almost immediately. Zhumagulov avoids a clinch attempt. A few leg kicks land for Zhumagulov. Paiva eats a combination and clinches up. Outside trip from Zhumagulov and he lands in the guard of Paiva, lands a couple of elbows, and then the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Zhumagulov, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Zhumagulov lands an inside leg kick to get the last round going. Right lands for Zhumagulov. They trade rights, Paiva lands a body kick follow up. Paiva lands a straight right. Inside leg kick from Paiva lands. Zhumagulov lands a left. Another exchange of rights. Zhumagulov lands a left. Takedown for Zhumagulov, but Paiva scrambles back up immediately. Body kick from Paiva, then an inside leg kick. They clinch but don’t keep it. Paiva has Zhumagulov backed into the fence, but Zhumagulov lands a right hook. Another clinch, and again Paiva disengages quickly. Paiva lands a kick to the groin and Zhumagulov is down but will have time to recover. Replay confirms that one, the toes went straight into the cup and I’m in sympathy pains now. Zhumagulov is in serious pain, but he’s back up on his feet at least. Paiva gets a warning as we restart. Zhumagulov gets a takedown, Paiva rolls through and is up then separates. Paiva defends a double leg attempt. Zhumagulov dives for another takedown, they wind up clinched and Zhumagulov takes a knee to the groin just about as the clock runs down.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Paiva but could go either way, 29-28 Paiva overall

Paiva got lucky the ref didn’t take a point for that groin shot, I might have given how bad it was. No interview for the winner.

Marcin Tybura has gone just 2-4 in his last six fights, but he is coming off of a win and could get his first winning streak since 2017 up and running here. Maxim Grishin took this fight on fairly short notice but he hasn’t lost since 2016 when he was bested by now UFC fighter Magomed Ankalaev, now he’s looking to take out a proven UFC caliber fighter and start his climb up the heavyweight ranks. Tybura is a slight -115 favorite to -105 for Grishin.

Heavyweight Bout: Maxim Grishin (30-7-2, 223 lbs.) vs. Marcin Tybura (18-6, 252 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two have identical heights and reach, Grishin much lighter though as he tends to hang out at light heavy. They touch gloves to get us going. Both men feinting early, Tybura looks every bit of that thirty pound weight difference. Body shot from Grishin. Tybura catches a body kick but can’t get the takedown. They wind up clinched and Tybura is leaning on Grishin against the fence. They break without incident. Another clinch on the fence. They fight for position, Grishin lands an elbow and they break. Grishin lands a jab. Tybura lands a leg kick. Another clinch on the fence. A knee from Grishin lands. Tybura looks for a single leg, Grishin down to his knees against the fence. The round will end in that spot.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Tybura I guess

ROUND TWO: A lot of circling to start this round. Bit of a left from Grishin. Tybura tries for a body kick, it hits the groin of Grishin. Grishin is ready to continue quickly. Tybura is slowly backing Grishin to the fence, he misses a left and clinches up again. There’s some dispute over a groin strike in the clinch, it seems Tybura was on the wrong end of that one but wants to maintain the position on the fence. Tybura looks to change levels, Grishin defending so far. Elbow from Tybura. Single leg attempt from Tybura but Grishin defends again. There’s an elbow from Grishin as they break. Tybura blocks a high kick and lands a bit of a right. Another clinch situation. Knees from Grishin and he puts Tybura on the fence. Tybura spins him back and starts looking for a double leg. Finally Tybura gets the double leg, with about 10 seconds left and the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Tybura, 20-18 Tybura overall

ROUND THREE: Back to slow circling. Grishin avoids a few punches. Jab from Grishin, Tybura lands a front kick. Tybura gets Grishin to the fence and has another clinch. Some knees from Tybura as he’s moved around to the rear waist lock position. Back chest to chest and Tybura gets a double leg into half guard. Grishin gets full guard quickly. Tybura passes to half guard. Some short elbows from Tybura. Full mount now for Tybura. Grishin gives up his back and Tybura gets both hooks in. A body triangle now for Tybura as Grishin is on one knee. They kind of sag to the side and Tybura is looking for the choke. Grishin to his knees again, Tybura lands a few punches. Time, despite nearly stopping during this fight, will run out eventually in that spot.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Tybura, 30-27 Tybura overall

Predictably boring heavyweight fight, though I can see him technically getting a 10-8 third. No interview as we move on from the early prelims to the middle prelims.

Leonardo Santos is undefeated in the UFC at 6-0-1 and hasn’t lost since 2009, but that’s also just seven fights in a little over seven years and despite his ability the infrequent action is bit of a problem. Roman Bogatov is undefeated coming into his UFC debut, and while he’s getting anything but a soft touch here there is a big opportunity to be the first to take out Santos in the UFC. Santos is your -170 favorite against +150 for Bogatov.

Lightweight Bout: Roman Bogatov (10-0, 155.5 lbs.) vs. Leonardo Santos (17-3-1, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Santos is eleven years older, has four inches of height and an inch and a half of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get us going, Bogatov showing stance switching already. Bogatov slips, that’s happened a fair bit so far I wonder if there’s an issue with the mat. Bit of a leg kick from Santos. Santos lands a one two. Bogatov lands a leg kick and a right. Left from Bogatov. Santos gets poked in the eye so we’ve got time. Replay confirms the poke but Santos can continue. Bit of a body kick from Santos. Bogatov misses a spinning attack and Santos gets his back and looks to drag him down to the mat. Santos doesn’t like the position, or something about it, and pushes free to reset. Bogatov lands a jab. Knee from Santos lands. Santos hits a leg kick. Body kick from Bogatov, and another one. Single leg attempt from Bogatov but Santos avoids it, then Bogatov lands a body shot. Combination from Bogatov but Santos gets the back standing and drags things down. The round will end there.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Santos but could go either way

ROUND TWO: Bogatov comes out quickly this round, both men miss rights. Body shots from Bogatov now, he’s starting to get to Santos more as the fight wears on. A couple of lefts from Bogatov, then he tries a double leg that stalls out on the fence. Santos is defending on the fence so far. Bogatov switches to a high crotch, loses his grip and lands a couple of short lefts while looking to change levels again. Santos still defending well, they wind up chest to chest then Santos separates. Knee from Santos, and another then a right that hurts Bogatov. Santos unloads with more rights on the fence, then a head kick but Bogatov remains upright. A right from Santos staggers Bogatov and he’s after a single leg now. Santos sprawling away from that, Bogatov holding on. Santos moves to the ride position and lands some punches. Hammer fists from Santos now as Bogatov looks to come up on a single leg. Bogatov is able to reverse and come up on top mounting the legs along the fence. Santos might have punched himself out during that sequence. Bogatov lands a few rights, Santos gets full guard. More rights from Bogatov to the body and head, amazing he’s turned this around. Bogatov postures up and swings punches to the body and head again. Another flurry from Bogatov closes out the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Santos, Bogatov avoided the 10-8, 20-18 Santos overall

ROUND THREE: They touch gloves for the final round. Bogatov jabbing and pressuring forward. There’s a near takedown from Bogatov, they’re still clinched and Santos takes a knee to the groin. That was a bad one, both men still visibly gassed and will be taking advantage of this. Santos is flat on his back, combination of pain and fatigue, and I’m surprised he’s even up. The doctor is in now to check on him, Santos still on his back. Santos sitting up now at least, and back on his feet. Santos can continue and we’re back to fighting. Bogatov pressuring forward quickly, lands a right to the body. Double leg attempt from Bogatov, switches to a single leg but can’t finish it. They wind up clinched, Santos defending so far. Bogatov after another single leg, still can’t finish it. Body shot from Bogatov as they’re still clinched. Near double leg from Bogatov, but Santos is able to bounce a bit off of the fence and remain upright. Something happened in the clinch, Santos claims he was fouled so we’ve got time again. Replay shows it was a little dubious, more a glancing blow if anything. That said the man did get smashed hard there earlier so I wont blame him. Santos can continue quickly though and we’re fighting. Bogatov with a spinning back fist and he’s after a single leg again. Santos is down on a knee against the fence, Bogatov lands lefts to the head while looking to get him flat. Santos down to his seat, and now back on a knee. Bogatov up, Santos still on a knee and Bogatov lands an blatantly illegal knee to the head. Total foul there, the body was even open but he went to the head. The doctor is back in for Santos, I’d just DQ Bogatov at this point, that was ridiculous. Santos can continue, and we get the two point deduction for a deliberate foul before restarting. Bogatov comes out punching, he needs a finish. They clinch up then break. Bogatov pressuring and punching, he lands a right. Santos gets a clinch but takes body shots before slipping free. Body kick from Bogatov, then an uppercut that wobbles Santos, who pulls half guard as the clock runs out.

SCORECARD: 9-8 Santos after the two point deduction, 29-26 Santos overall

Odd fight, Bogatov was coming on in the third before he basically fouled out. No interview for Santos.

Makwan Amirkhani has gone 2-2 in his last four fights and is coming off of a loss to Shane Burgos, he’s trying to avoid the first losing streak of his career. Danny Henry has gone 2-1 in the UFC but is coming off of a loss to Dan Ige, he’s looking to avoid his first losing streak and take out one of the more recognizable names he’s come across. Amirkhani is the -200 favorite to a +175 payout for Henry.

Featherweight Bout: Makwan Amirkhani (15-4, 146 lbs.) vs. Danny Henry (12-3, 146 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Henry is two inches taller and has an inch of reach on Amirkhani. Southpaw for Amirkhani. Henry misses a head kick. Bit of a right to the body from Henry. Both men pawing with the lead hand now, looking for some kind of advantage. Henry lands an inside leg kick. Jumping body kick from Henry lands. Jumping knee from Amirkhani into a clinch on the fence. Body lock takedown for Amirkhani, he chases an anaconda choke, he’s mostly got it wrapped up but is working to tighten things up. Henry tries to defend but that’s tight and he winds up going out.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Amirkhani for his work this evening. Mic time for Amirkhani, he says he’s been waiting for this since his last fight when everything went wrong and feels he proved he still belongs here. He talks us through the finish and notes he’s pretty slick with that choke.

Unfortunately this clip doesn’t have the interesting bits, but this point the choke is locked up and Amirkhani just has to keep rotating into Henry to compress everything down.

Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos has a stellar UFC record of 8-2, he’s coming off of a solid win as well and is trying to build another winning streak while trying to make headway in the competitive welterweight division. Muslim Salikhov has gone 3-1 in the UFC but is on a three fight winning streak and now finds himself in prime position for the biggest win of his career. Salikhov is a slight -145 favorite while the +125 payout for dos Santos has to tempt some bettors.

Welterweight Bout: Muslim Salikhov (16-2, 171 lbs.) vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos (22-6, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Dos Santos has three inches of reach despite the height being identical. They touch gloves to get us going. Salikhov pushing forward. Dos Santos lands an inside leg kick. Salikhov catches a kick and lands a right. Leg kick from Salikhov. Both men still getting a read on each other, feinting and trying to get a feel for the fight. Hard inside leg kick from Salikhov. Dos Santos lands a left. Calf kick from dos Santos lands. Both men working inside leg kicks, Salikhov lands a spinning back kick to the body. Spinning kicks from both men mostly miss. Salikhov lands a left hook. Bit of a right from Salikhov and he avoids the counters. Dos Santos is after a takedown, that winds up in a clinch. Some body shots are traded before they break. Volkan Oezdemir rebounded from a three fight losing streak and currently finds himself on a two fight winning streak and looking to get back to the top of the division with another win here. Jiri Prochazka is on a ten fight winning streak that includes wins over several UFC veterans or just all around tough fighters, he could make an immediate impact in the UFC by taking out a ranked opponent in his debut. Oezdemir is the -155 favorite to +135 on Prochazka.

Light Heavyweight Bout: #7 Volkan Oezdemir (17-4, 205.5 lbs.) vs. Jiri Prochazka (26-3-1, 205 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Prochazka is an inch taller but has a whopping five inches of reach over Oezdemir. They touch gloves to get us going. Prochazka switching his stance already. Paige VanZant is just 2-3 in her last five fights but did win about 18 months ago and could get her first winning streak since 2015 up and running here. Ribas is your massive favorite at -900 to a +600 payout on VanZant.

To close she says she’s going to move back to strawweight and wants a big fight again.

Jessica Andrade is a former strawweight champion but is coming off of the fight where she lost that title, now she’s hoping to remain in the title picture with a second win over another former champion. Rose Namajunas is also a former strawweight champion, but she hasn’t fought in over a year. In fact her last appearance was when Jessica Andrade slammed her into unconsciousness and took the belt from her. The winner of this fight is the presumptive next title challenger, so the stakes are very real for both women. Namajunas is the favorite at -200 to a +175 comeback on Andrade.

Great fight. Mic time for Namajunas, who’s left eye is badly swollen. She feels she was in the right state of mind tonight and that was the difference. She mentions getting right with God first and foremost, after that it’s just hard work and loving what she does again. Asked about the current champion she wants another shot at the belt but given the facial damage she’ll have to wait and see when she can get back into the cage. To close she mentions the UFC makeup artist who’s battling cancer and encourages people to donate to her in this time.

Petr Yan has only ever lost once and that by split decision, he’s gone 6-0 in the UFC and now finds himself opposite a true legend of the sport with the vacant bantamweight title on the line. Jose Aldo is an all time great, but he’s just 2-4 in his last six fights and is on a two fight losing streak. Aldo is getting this title shot more based on his name value than his merit in the division as he lost his bantamweight debut last year. Despite that if Aldo wins he could add his name the short list of double champions in UFC history and possibly enter the upper echelon of all time greats. Yan is your -240 favorite to an even +200 payout on an Aldo win.

Max Holloway just had an all time great run at featherweight stopped when he lost the UFC featherweight title to his opponent tonight. Holloway is trying to become just the second two time featherweight champion in UFC history and further cement himself as an all time great. Alexander Volkanovski has never lost at featherweight, or lightweight for that matter, and had an all time great performance when he took the title from Holloway last year. Volkanovski is trying to get his first title defense under his belt and begin forging his championship legacy. The odds are with the champion Volkanovski at -220 to a +185 comeback on Holloway.

Wonderful fight, could legitimately go 3-2 for either man. Mic time for Volkanovski, he puts over Holloway but feels he won because he won the final round when it was 2-2. He mentions trying to break Holloway’s rhythm but couldn’t quite get there and puts Holloway over again. He mentions he and Holloway have fought for ten rounds and had to prepare for the worst. Asked about the future he wants another fight before the end of the year and wants to take out every challenger the division has.

Jorge Masvidal had one of the most impressive years, especially in terms of career rehabilitation, last year when he beat Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz all via stoppage. Masvidal took this fight on about a weeks notice but now finds himself contending for the UFC welterweight title. One minor note, Masvidal is getting this shot in his 49th professional fight which makes him the most experienced title challenger in UFC history. Kamaru Usman has gone 11-0 in the UFC in a run that has seen him win the welterweight title and defend it once. Usman could tie Georges Saint-Pierre for the longest winning streak in welterweight history if he wins here in addition to scoring his second title defense while continuing to establish his legacy. The champion Usman is the favorite at -250 to a +210 comeback on Masvidal.

Giving Usman the first round seems very wrong to me. That said he definitely won. Mic time for Usman, he talks about having to switch gears from Burns to Masvidal but he did it despite the game plans being very different. He says Masvidal is tough. Asked about the new work with Trevor Wittman he says he felt good with the team and puts over his corner and team. He puts over Masvidal again but notes he’s just a level better. Asked about what’s next, he says he’s the champ so there’s never going to be a lack of opponents then mentions how long he’s been training for this fight and that he wants to take a bit of time off with his family after all that.

Alright, on that note UFC 251 comes to an end. We got three title fights, two of which went the distance and the other of which went into the fifth round. On a 13 fight overall card. Yeah, it was long and capped off with a fairly uninteresting fight. But the middle of the main card was pretty darn good, Volkanovski vs. Holloway was a great fight whatever you thought of the decision and Yan vs. Aldo was surprisingly great. There are two UFC events coming up this week, one on Wednesday which lost the co-main event of Edgar vs. Munhoz earlier this week.
