Vicente Luque spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Alvaro Herrera at UFC Fight Night 90 and more. Some highlights are below:
On picking up some momentum: “I’m coming off a victory now. I debuted in the promotion with a loss, so I wanted to show everyone my true potential. … I wanted to show that I could win decisively, (and) I managed to do it.”
On Herrera: “I’ve studied his game. He’s dangerous, with heavy hands. He always moves forward. But, at the same time, I think it’s a good matchup for me. I also like to strike and move forward. I think it will be a fun fight for the fans. I’m also training on the ground too. It’s where I feel I have an extra edge. But, without a doubt, I’ll look to strike at first. It will be a very active bout.”
On recuperating from TUF 21: “After those four fights, my body was really feeling it. I needed to rest up. I took about three to four weeks to rest, while still training, but not as hard. Once I was ready to fight again, the UFC booked me for July. We don’t get to decide when we’ll fight. We’re always waiting to be called up. I like to fight three or four times per year. Sometimes that didn’t happen, but it was mostly due to lack of opportunity. After this fight, I hope to keep fighting, perhaps twice more this year.”
On an eventual title shot: “Without a doubt, I think about the belt. But I think I have a lot of work ahead of me and a lot to prove in my weight class. I’m thinking about winning in dominant fashion again so I can climb the rankings. I want a higher-ranked and more notable opponent each time I fight. I am a risky fight for anyone, and I can win the belt.”
