Parasite Joker Academy Awards

The 92nd Academy Awards went with a bit of a surprise on Sunday night, as Parasite swept the top awards of Best Picture and Best Director. The South Korean film took home four awards, adding Best Original Screenplay (shared with co-writer Han Jin-won) and an expected win for Best International Film to its Best Picture and Best Director wins. The win makes Parasite the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture at the award ceremony.

The win was an upset, as 1917 had most of the momentum for Best Picture and Director for Sam Mendes. The war film had swept through many of the major award ceremonies with wins. In the end it left with three awards: Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Mixing.

While Parasite and 1917 won the most awards, there was plenty of love to be spread down the ticket. The acting awards went entirely as expected, with Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), Renee Zellweger (Judy), Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) winning Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress, respectively. All four had swept most of the wins throughout award season. Toy Story 4 ,claimed Best Animated Feature, while Taika Waititi took home Best Adapted Screenplay for his World War II satire Jojo Rabbit. Ford v. Ferrari found room for a couple of technical wins, namely Best Sound Editing and Best Film Editing.
