Warning: Spoilers follow for Captain Marvel.

Mashable recently spoke to Captain Marvel co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who discussed the film’s cameo featuring the late Marvel Comics writer and creator, Stan Lee. During the film, Carol Danvers encounters Stan Lee while she is searching for a Skrull infiltrator who is in disguise as a human on a train. While searching for the Skrull, she has an interaction with Stan Lee, who is reading a script for the 1995 film Mallrats. In the 19995 Kevin Smith film, Mallrats, Stan Lee had a cameo as himself. In short, Stan Lee was playing himself in Captain Marvel. Below are some highlights from the interview.

Boden on how the cameo scene was executed: “Instead of just the pure laugh we had, we had a little bit of a smile from Captain Marvel in response to it, and she kind of breaks character for a moment. I think it reflects a little bit of what the audience is feeling, and we allowed that to happen.”

Fleck on having the Marvel logo serve as a tribute to Stan lee at the beginning of the film: “The Marvel logo was a Marvel thing that they presented to us. They said, ‘Hey guys, what do you think of this? We were thinking of doing this for the movie.’ And we were just like – We were just moved by it.”

Boden on getting to meet Stan Lee for the film: “We feel really lucky to have gotten the opportunity to meet him, and have that special moment on set. There’s so much reverence when he comes around, and he brings so much life and respect there with him.
