Fede Alvarez Gives Update On Alien: Romulus Sequel

Fede Alvarez is working on a follow-up to Alien: Romulus and he recently gave an update on the new film. The director spoke with Empire Online and noted that he is working on the script for the new film with co-writer Rodo Sayagues, teasing that the new film will go in some new directions.
“Rodo and I are working on that right now,” Alvarez said. “We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”
The next film will follow Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) after the events of the last film, and Alvarez noted that they will only move forward when they have a story worthy of a new film. He noted, “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before. The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel. But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.”
Alien: Romulus was a hit for 20th Century Studios, grossing $350.9 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. Set between the events of Alien and Aliens, it followed a crew of young space colonists trying to start a new life and scavenging a derelict space station, only to encounter the titular Xenomorphs.
